Culdaff bay
-
cathaldParticipant
An old man approached me last week down at Culdaff shore and asked me If I could get a photo for
him,He wanted me to climb a hill on his land and take a shot across the bay with Glengad head and
Malin in the distance.Went down today for a scout about and the hill walk nearly killed me but this
is what I came up with so far
randomwayMemberGreat view. I love those surfs and the light on the top half of the image. I have to be honest, I find the colours a bit too vivid, oversaturated, and the sky is strange. Was it a long exposure shot?
Also, I keep going back to the edge of the picture on the left side where the bay ends… I think, a bit wider framing would have helped there.
Is it an exposure comp or the new digital cameras are this good at dynamic range? The bottom half looks a little bit unreal.
Overall, it’s not a bad picture really, but overprocessed for my taste.

p.s. Hit me if I was too honest, or blame nfl-fan for the idea of giving more critique on the landscape photos.
cathaldParticipantHey Zoltan be as honest as you like buddy its the way I like it
This is a blend of three different exposures
The clouds did look like this weird looking
I had the saturation a lot lower but the guy wanted bold colours
The area below me was frosty and the sun does not get high enough that’s
as high as the sun gets in the top half of the image
Thanks for replyCathal
sean1098MemberI like this shot Cathal, Think the processing is fine. You had lovely light hitting the frame. Would like to see a single exposure to compare them.
Is this above caratra ?
Sean.

This is the hill above Caratra and here is a single exposure so you can see what i had to work with

Does it have to be from this spot? I think you may get a view as good, if not better, from
Dunmore Head. I’d also be tempted to wait for the greens to recover naturally rather
than trying to boost them in Photoshop.Apart from that, it’s a very appealing shot and plenty of Culdaffians would like this one.
gibsterParticipantThe old guy obviously isn’t as slow as he walks getting you to hike the hill on his behalf. I think the request for bold colours is fine but would maybe reign in the sand midway through the image as the contrast against the frost covered sand at the bottom is what gives it a sureal edge for me.

Yes Pete I’d agree about the shot from Dunmore head funny enough that
was where I was coming down from last week when the guy met me and asked
me to do it from this spot
