d300 v 40d v A700

okay .. so it looks like theres a battle brewing for the pro-sumer DSLR market with 3 new models launching all about the same time.
Just when I’d pretty much decided on a mid-range camera when first the new Canon 40D was announced, followed by the Nikon D300, and just this week I found out Sony have announced their Alpha A700.

The sony seems to be in between the canon and Nikon in specification, but the problem with it is all the accessories are typically sony overpriced, unfortunate. Had the add-ons been similar pricing to the Canon I might have considerd the A700 as my upgrade, but now I think I’ll just bite the bullet and get the Canon 40D as soon as I get the finances sorted to cover the body and a good lens for sports work.

Sonys prices for attachments are out in the next field. I wouldn’t buy any of them and reviews normally slate them but there are excellent third party lenses such as Sigma, Tamron and Tokina to name some and a lot of the older Minolta lenses will fit. I’ve a varied collection for the A100. A point to note is that Image Stabilisation on the A700 is built in so each lens is cheaper as a result of not having to buy IS each time. On the other hand PopPhoto review all three and the battle realistically is between Nikon and Canon. Sony is close but doesn’t have some of the “shop window” features that the other two have. I’ll be going with the A700 as it’s an improvement on the A100 but if given the choice I wouldn’t be too sure.

There isn’t anyone can say to help you make your mind up. The trouble with choices, eh!

If you can live with the thought that your camera is not the latest newest release, I’d say that a Canon 30d or a Nikon d200 would be also a good start. Better AF and sensors are nice, lower prices are even nicer….
