D5000 is underexposing on when shooting in the direction sun

    Hi all

Im just wondering if any if you have an issue with regard to the Nokia d5000 under exposing your shots in the sun. There were a few great shots taken of Howth over the weekend but some were ruined by extreme under exposure, Is there a setting that I can disable or enable to stop this from happening. I was shooting in aperture priority at f11 at iso 200 or so, I was letting the camera auto select the iso. I have a active d lighting set to normal.

    Thanks guys

Your camera is probably metering the brightest element in the frame, ie sky so
try metering the frame in the opposite direction to the sun, then recomposing
the shot? If you are using auto settings, meter for “middle” light then noting the
aperture switch to aperture prioity set the aperture accordingly and recompose
your shot. There is probably a much simpler way of doing it but that is how I
    got round the problem.

Take a shot check your settings, if underexposed then either shutter speed is too fast
or aperture is too small, adjusting either or both should balance it out.

As Jenny says the camera is metering based on the sky which is probably most of the scene. The camera is working correctly
in that instance. You have to decide yourself what you want the camera to see.

For landsape photography, look to purchase graduated filters so that you can control the exposure alot better between the sky and the rest of the scene. Essentially they are used to block out some of the light from the sky while allowing you to manually expose for the ‘ground’.
It’ll help get those perfect exposures.

Guys thanks for the replys I am going to try that next time we have a sunny weekend , could be a while.

I have attached quite a nice underexposed shot that I took from Howth looking in towards the city and the dublin mountains, It seems from the exposure that the photo was taken at dawn when in fact it was the middle of the day with great light…

Its a nice effect though in this instance dont you think? Something very relaxed about this shot :)
