D700 or not D700

I am having a bit of a dilema with the D700 in that i cant decide weather to get it or not
My D80 is still going strong but i would like the d700 for its low noise high iso capabilities but but its a lot of money ans is only a two and a bit improvement in mega pixels now as some say pixels aint what they used to be but has any one an opinon or direct experience of the D700?
I already have a 50mm 1.4 AFD that i can use with it but will be considering options for a wide and long lens.
grief dilemas :)
AidanMParticipantI know your pain.
I have a D80 and a D300 and am seriously considering the D700. I’ve tried one out and they are amazing. When I got my D300 I went for all full frame lenses so I wouldn’t have the lens problem for the next upgrade.
Maybe have a look at the D300s, or I’m fairly sure either a D700s or D800 will be released pretty soon. Cameras tend to be upgraded about every two years or so by Nikon.
If you went for a D300s and spent the extra money on some really nice lenses that may be better. I have the Sigma 12-24mm f4.5-5.6 wide angle lens that is really sweet and is full frame. Just my two cents worth.

MMXParticipantIf I had the money I would buy it right now, it´s an awesome camera, I know some people who use it.
Check this one for example, we photographed some concerts together: http://www.sichr.net/fotografie.php” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
crampParticipantHi
I have the D700 and just actually sold my D300s today, I bought the D300s to use as a holiday camrea along with an 18-200mm lens but I coul never go away without the D700. However I would wait a couple of months as there is a replacement due and you could either pick up a secondhand one cheaper or buy the new model. The only thing is be prepared to start forking out of some serious lenses!

constantineParticipantYep, I use the D700 as a backup to other bodies and find it a great camera. I will echo other advice and say hold on for a couple of months and you’ll pick them up for much cheaper than they are now…saying that, I have seen them priced in an around 1300 sterling in some places, which, although a lot of money, still cheaper thna it was….

With this “strategy” you could wait forever…
BTW Isn´t a couple of months of photography experience worth more than the price difference?
PitmaticMemberthere is a lot of truth in the argument tht you could wait forever… however i have seen nothing that ays a 700 replaceeent is on the horizon and the d700.com site predicted an upgraded modell last year…
I am prepared to spend big on glass within reason :) MMX do your band shooting friends have any full res samples to examine? using the D80 in that sort of situation usually means a bit noise… but thats so darned good its a little exciting
MMXParticipantgsParticipantGreat camera to work with & full frame with FX lenses make this good value for money for quality possible.
High ISO capability is a BIG advantage to have when you need it with good quality results.
good choice ……….constantineParticipantPitmatic wrote:

There’s a possability that a replacement will be announced some time in the autumn… if it is, my ‘strategy’ as MMX calls it, would pay off, as the the price of D700’s would fall by a few percent, and second hands would flood into the market…
The D700 is a great camera, pretty much a D3 in a smaller body, add the battery grip and you have the same FPS as you do with the d3. Even if a replacement comes out soon, you’ll be very happy with your purchase.
MMXParticipantThat “possibility” is just an unconfirmed rumor, same as rumors about Canon 60D or 24-70 f/2.8 L IS.
Moreover even if they announced it, it will take another few months till it will be available in stock and it´s price will be higher than the price of the current D700.PS: “second hands would flood into the market” – nonsense, D700 is a camera for serious photographers who don´t replace their equipment everytime there´s a new release. I visited Sheldon´s studio and he still uses Nikon D2H which was announced in 2003 so why would anyone sell a camera from 2008?
wesleylawMemberConsidering that you have a D80, the difference between a D80 and a D300 is a lot bigger than the difference between a D300 and a D700. From a D80-D300 you will notice that noise is handled a whole lot better at higher ISO. The D700 (i dont have one) is better again and seems to have a bigger dynamic range which means more control over highlights. I remember CianMcLiam talking more specifically about those 3 cameras some time ago but I cant find the post. I would PM him.

Still a possability. September is usually the month of new releases.
Nonsense?? Yeah….. Second hand market always gets a glut when a replacement camera/lens is released. Serious photographers are known to upgrade the odd time…
CageyParticipantOh God I’d love a D700, if I had the money I’d buy one in a heart-beat. beautiful camera.
For now, the humble D200, which took me long enough to get, may do. I might trade it and grab a cheap D90 for the better noise handling when they inevitably start to drop a lot in price. You really don’t ‘need’ the latest gear, that would make you a gear-head over a photographer. It is nice if you got the bank balance, but I think the sensible money goes on the used deals when the gear-heads off-load their old toys … I mean cameras :D

Yeah, releases… but you´re lucky if you manage to buy it before Christmas. And especially for landscape photographers autumn is the best part of the year.
