D700 or not D700

  • he, he, he….gear angst :), am glad I haven’t got that problem….
Be outcome driven and ask yourself what you need to achieve what you want; are you going to see any difference in your prints at the size you print them at all? Does the D700 or its successor have features that you don’t have right now, but regard as essential AND/OR significant? OK, there is the joy factor of holding something new in your hands, but that’s a different story altogether.
I’ve had the same basic DSLR and, amongst a lot of other older gear, a versatile old 5×7″ view camera for ages and am not in the market for anything new for the foreseeable future (read: next five years or so, at which time I may have worn out my DSLR body). For me there is simply no need to jump on the upgrade wagon unless I’d have e.g. certain customers demanding it, it has become a tax-deducted business expense, or there is a particular application that might need a certain feature desperately. You can zoom in way past print-out size on your screen and see more noise/moire/less detail, but print your pics and hang them on the wall, or even more extreme, just putting them on the web ….. and the advantage is gone. Completely. Your existing camera is much better already than most photographers would ever do justice to. – Big hammer, ordinary nail, money wasted. Ok, time for my medication :)

reasons to upgrade outside of monetary driven reasons: faster, better build, better IQ, less noise, better control.

Upgrading does not always have to driven by how much money you will make with your new gear. You upgrade because you simply want to.

If nobody ever did, well, we’d all still be using old film cameras.

    Hey Pitmatic

Im currently shooting with a D700. I went from D80 to D300 and now the D700 for about 6 months.

My reason was also for the low noise in high ISO’s. My experience with it so far has been great.

I have have mostly been doing street photography the last couple of years and have been shooting at f2.8. But a couple months back i got a nice little tip from another D700 user.

I take street portraits of old / homeless people. So i like to pick up every little detail. So i change my ISO to 800 or more and my aperture to f8 or higher while keeping a fast shutter speed. This way i get loads of detail – BUT… i still get a clean, noise free file because of the D700’s great performance at high ISO.

You mentioned that the MP is a concern. Its not a huge upgrade. Even going from the D300 to D700 is a nice little upgrade just based on the censor sizes.

I read in some article that the more pixels you squeeze on a sensor will affect the quality. So its 12mp on cropped censor or 12mp on a full frame sensor. So i chose the full frame sensor ;-)

Another thing to keep in mind is the lenses. When putting on a DX lens on the D700 body. The D700 goes into DX mode. So it crops into the center part of the image.. losing pixels… i think it goes down to 5MP.

So you will have to buy FX lenses.. Its not such a big deal.. Your 50mm will work great.

If your worried about pixels… Go for the 5D MK2.. Its a bit cheaper and its 20something MP..

    Hi

I went for the D700 in the end and have been very pleased with the noise at high iso’s recently i was commissioned to take photos of a childrens drama showcase and was able to take a lot of shots at 3200 in the near dark and the local press were all flashing away and there was me just clicking away and getting a lot of keepers at f4, the show used a lot of back projection and flash would have just bleached the screen out.

As for FX lenses dont forget that the not too old nikon film lenses work fine and can be had at very good prices used.

I am pleased with it but its not cheap and I will be using that probably when 50mp sensors become a bit small looking :)
