Well folks i have been looking to upgrade the camera for a few weeks now
and i have been looking for a D200 but now i have come across the D80
they seem to be fairly similar and was wondering if anybody here was using one
would you recomend me getting one over a D200

I used a D80 only once, and I own a D200. The D80 feels lighter, there is a useless picture mode switch where you find the iso/wb/quality switch on the d200. The D80 is much quieter, too. They say that the high iso performance is not as good as the d200 (I wouldn’t swear on that). I think, their price is quite similar now, so I would go for the D200… only because I prefer cameras with less buttons and switches, and more manual control. The picture quality is almost the same though, so you have to hold them in hand to see which one you prefer.

Hi Cathald, I have been using my D80 for about 6 months now, after upgrading from the D50…………it is a great camera, and the image quality is first rate. I have never used a D200 so can not comment on it, but have seen many excellent shots posted here and on other forums, and it seems to get very favourable reviews! As Zoltan say’s the D200 is the more advanced model, but the D80 ,as far as i know has the same sensor and autofocus?

I would suggest if possible you get your hand on both camera’s maybe “borrow” them and try out and see which one suits you better!!

    Have a look at:-

D200, without a doubt. I upgraded to the D300 recently but still use my D200 on a regular basis. Though quite a few of my students have the D80 and they are happy with it.

I suppose I have to declare my bias by saying that I judge all DSLR’s by whether they have mirror lock-up (I take a lot of dusk shots, which needs this). Mirror lockup on the D80 can only be used for sensor cleaning. The D200 has a dedicated position on an outside dial for a real mirror lockup for shooting,

    Hey cathald,
I would say go for the d200, or if you can afford it, hold on til you can get the d300, imo, a much better camera.
d80 is a nice camera anyhow, used one for a good while before upgrading.

D200! It’s quicker and easier to get to the controls, a more solid feel and I believe faster handling all around.
