Dahlias – First Ever Post…

Hi all,
Read about here and like the information and the advice that ye all give so I thought I might try and get some… Bought a camera recently – nothing special Fuji S5600 to do some photography as a bit of a hobby. Got caught out on safari without good camera so thought I might get some skills before I go again and take a camera!! But would apprectiate any advice… I took these photos on the first day I had the camera – was a sunny october afternoon so I’d appreciate any help you can give me on future shots….
The next one I like because it has the hint of decay in behind the beauty – the petals are beginning to fall off but you wouldn’t see them from the front…
Any advice would be greatly appreciated…

I?m not a expert but i can tell yours first pictures is really nice shot !
try only set up camera on f4 max or try 2,8 , flower will be nice and will have nice background to
Second for me is not so good, this flower on the right to close and to big :?jb7Participantlovely sharpness, detail, modeling and colour on the first one, though bits of the backround are distracting. small changes in viewpoint can lead to huge changes in composition when working close-up- best advice is to shoot lots, and choose the best later-

John GriffinParticipantHope you stick with the photography, don’t get dishearted if your pics don’t look as good as some of the rest on this site. Photography is a big long learning curve, thats why we all love it, there’s always something new to learn and try, but think of your camera as a musical instrument, it’ll take a while to get the feel of the camera and how to use it and the more you practice the sweeter you pics will look.
A compact camera is fine when starting out and figuring out if this is really for you, but you won’t learn alot from it especially if your shooting in automatic modes, you’ll only learn composition.
When your sure you want to keep at this hobby then go get a small DSLR something like the Canon 400D or the Canon 30D or look at the second hand DSLR’s. I can only recommend Canon cameras as a make, thats all i’ve ever used, its a great system. You could look at Nikon too, but everybody knows Canon is better :wink:Take loadsa pics and always look for something different in each one. You’ve made a good start with your first pic.
PeteTheBlokeMemberirishlensParticipantNice capture of roadside dahlia display !
Just to tease the Canon versus Nikon silliness here is a Pom Pom dahlia with unusual two colour petals I took in Kiltimagh a few months back
Nikon D70, 17-55mm f/2.8 Nikkor.
RobMemberThat pom pom dahlia is terrific, very sharp and great dof. Love the square crop too, really suits this type of image.
