Dan O’Donovan Memorial Cycling Race

I attended this event as I wanted to practice my panning which I had tried at a Triathlon event previously and hadn’t turned too great. I’m happy enough with this lot and certainly there better than the previous ones.
Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

miki gParticipantHi Dave.
A nice set of images & your panning is fairly good too. Cycling tends to be a difficult subject to photograph successfully, but you seem to be on the right track.
I would try to avoid areas where there are “isolated” spectators, parked cars, signposts etc in the background, as they tend to distract from the main subject. The use of fill-in flash will help to freeze the subject & lift shadows, and if used with a slow shutter speed will help your panning shots by separating the subject from the background. Shooting on a hill (where the riders are going up), will slow down the riders, but will also make panning more difficult. If possible, move further back & use a telephoto to blur the background even more in the cropped subject shots & try to get them face on if you can (without getting on the road). For the “full subject”, use a wide angle lens (obvious), but shoot from a low angle, this will give a more dynamic look to the shots. At the finishing line, go beyond the line & use a telephoto (straight on) to capture the expressions on the riders faces or use a wide angle from the same area to capture the spectators cheering them on. Depending on the type of shots you are after will determine the type of focusing technique that you will use. I would use AI servo for subjects moving towards the camera or use One shot AF or manual pre-focus, for subjects moving across my field of view. Hope these little tips help, but be warned, I’m no expert. :lol:SeaviewParticipantThanks for your detailed response, some very good points made which I need to think about for a while as I don’t agree with them all. :x  I thought about using a flash but I don’t know weather the athletes would mind or not. Maybe something to try out in the future.
Thanks again.
Dave.
