Darkroom Workshop for Beginners: 29th Sept.

Hi, due to a great day last Saturday, I am organising another one day Darkroom Workshop for beginners on 29th September in Dundrum. This workshop is suited to beginners who wish to learn the basics of film development and darkroom printing. It may also suit those who have done darkroom work in the past but feel they may need a refresher course.

Each participant will need to bring at least one exposed and developed roll of traditional 35mm black & white film which can be of any subject. For this you can use any film camera from an expensive SLR to a basic compact camera.

Please note that this workshop does not involve the taking of photographs or any camera techniques. Level of experience with cameras (film or digital) is irrelevant. So all you need to bring are some negatives and you can take a full part in the workshop.

All paper and chemicals will be supplied and full workshop notes will also be provided. The cost for the day will be between ?65 to ?75 depending on the final number of people attending, (6 people max). Free parking is available.

A deposit of ?30 is required and will secure your place.

For further information, please post here or send me a pm.

Would it be ok for me to bring along some 120 medium format Neopan instead of 35mm (Holga Images)? Will you have a developing tank for this type of film? I will most prob buy my own and bring it along. Not so much interested in the printing side as i will most probably be scanning the negs but i would be interested in giving it a go as i have not done it in years

    Thanks
    Martin

    Hi Martin,

My plan is to demonstrate the loading of the film into the tank and to show how the development procedure works. Each participent will then get the chance to load a wasted roll of film as this is the part that most people have a problem with. We will not be actually developing any film as this would leave little time for making enlargements if we develope five or six films.

We could develop your roll of 120 as a demonstration, but it wouldn’t be dry for you to make prints from it on the same day. If you have any other developed films (120 or 35mm) we could print them.

Thanks for the response Peter. Sure count me in. I’ll bring along some processed 35mm and 120 negs so that i can make some prints. Would like to get some idea though as to how to process the 120 film as i will be trying to process this myself afterwards. Let me know how you want the 75 euro payed to you and I’ll get it to you straight away

    Thanks again

Are you intending to do this again? I currently develop my own B & W films and would like to print them rather than scan the negs as my scans are not so good – well crap actually – and would like some tips and techniques. Having lashed out recently, I have all the ingredients for a darkroom, enlarger, chemicals, trays, etc and once I get one of my children out of my potential darkroom, I’ll be away! That said a course would be great. Is anything happening on that front, or is there somewhere else I could go for a similar course?

    Hi Douglas,

I will be running more Darkroom courses but the next one may not be till January. If I do organise one before Christmas then I’ll let you know. Thanks for your interest.

    Regards,
    Peter
