David Kitt was playing a gig last night in Warrenpoint, he is without doubt one of the best performers I have ever seen.
Sadly this is without doubt one of the worst venues ever, I couldn’t believe the amount of total wankers that were there
unless he singing something of the headbanging, foot stomping, lets all jump up and down like complete rednecks kind
the crowd (well, not all, just about 15 of them that were right up the front of the stage in his face all night) were giving
him stick… Some dick even asked him to sing jive bunny! Wanker!!
I thought he was excellent, and I also thought he did well to keep his cool and not completely lose it, doubt very much
he’ll come back.Anyway… Took a few pictures, shot in manual and used long shutter speeds 3-5 seconds and used the on camera flash.
First time shooting digital at a gig, first time using this technique.Would really like your thoughts on these pictures, good or bad.
Sinead.
kenhParticipantLove the third one in particular – could be his promo shots!
Hope you got a good cup of coffee afterwards, at least :)

jessthespringerParticipantThanks Ken, had a coffee when I got home yeah, was just a pity that a couple of ass holes spoiled the night.
Sinead.
MartinParticipantInteresting technique, three nice shots taken using it. If i had a preference it would be the second shot. The technique isn’t as evident in the second one through unfortunately. A technique worth trying again for sure. Really like the contrast in these too
As for the knobjockeys (wankers  ) at the front, yea its a pity but you get them everywhere unfortunately
M
jb7ParticipantThey look good to me-
the only distraction might be the mike stand,
especially in the first-
and the diagonal line in the last-
because they’re flash lit, they’re going to have the most definition-Good studies, all three-
number two for me, if I was choosing,
but I like the strobe effect in the third too-
from the stage lights, as much as your own-Good to see a bit of an imaginative approach in this area too-
as Robbie says, you might not be allowed to use flash at many venues,
but good to have the technique in your repertoire should you need it-As for the rednecks, well, they managed to shake up the music business a few times in the course of it’s history-
if they start gobbing, make sure to bring a weatherproof camera,
and turn it on them…j
jessthespringerParticipantThanks for taking the time to post Martin, yeah would love to give this a go again
I had no idea what they were going to be like, did a few where I waved the camera about
they had streams of light in them, but the subject was sharp. As for contrast and PP I am really liking lightroom! I do the conversion there and then tweak
it in PS.And yeah, there are knobjockeys everywhere but this place seems to have more than it’s fair share.
Thanks again
SineadjessthespringerParticipantThanks j,
was wondering how I got that effect in the third shot, never thought of it being the strobe lights.
Yeah I know the mike and the line are distracting, but thats always an issue with gigs.I heard about the technique from a wedding photographer who does this for the first dance picture
think he uses a shorter shutter speed though. And if I had a camera that was really good at high iso settings my imagination might not be as good
Didn’t want to take any redneck shots, despite them lining up in front of me and asking what paper will this be in!!
RobMemberNice set there Sinead, very contrasty and moody.
Number two for me too…Rob.
Vanessa kennedyMemberjessthespringerParticipantCheers Rob, I like the contrast and the mood.
Vanessa, thanks, I had no ideas how I got that effect until jb7 pointed out it was most likley
the strobe lights. It was the only one that came out like that.My own favorite out of this set would be no.1 I know the mike stand is in the way but I just
like the movement. Thanks again for all comments on this one, very much appreciated.

well done(totally stealing your technique)jessthespringerParticipantWell now, it’s hardly my technique… you have to post if you try it though.
Envy all of you dublin based people with so many good gigs going on all the time :(
Sinead.
PhilRyanMemberLove these! They’re great to be honest. I really like the microphone in the first pic, could give some artsy-phartsy reasoning, but I’ll just leave it at I like it. And I like the diagonal section of the roof in the third. Kind of roots the viewer, rather than having 4 floating heads.
Lovely technique and work though!
PhiljessthespringerParticipantThanks Phil, I like the mike myself, it looked cool in the print.. even though the rest of the picture had a funny green cast over it (printers fault, not mine)
Would love to hear your artsy fartsy reason why you like it :wink:Cheers,
