Day as a second shooter.
-
figParticipant
My second attempt at wedding photography and this one went a little easier as I was just the second photographer and spent some time getting different shots. Would love to know your thoughts and if you have any suggestions next time for some “different” shots.
rerunMemberReally like 1, 3, 8 and 9. Like 6 aswell in a weird way, but I don’t know why. Pity the chairs are in the way for 3. Really like the reportage feel you got to your shots. Particularly like the light in 1 and 9. Were you using filters or some cool technique or something?
figParticipantThanks rerun. The light in the church was great, really bright and plain glass windows. I diffused the flash all right but only had a little fill most of the time.
I think the effect you like is in the post processing. Usual process:1 Crop to liking (keeping ratio),
2 Run a vintage/retro action that mutes the colours and adds some vignetting
3 Reduce opacity of vintage layer anywhere from 10% to 50% to taste
4 Sharpen if needed using high pass layer with overlay
5 Remove noise with Noise NinjaThe vintage action for photoshop was free somewhere (can’t remember) but I’ve put a copy here (http://phil.caint.com/vintageaction.zip) if you want it.
Cheers
Phil
easParticipantI really like the 3rd and 4th, well done.
not much wrong with those fig. For me some of the crops are too tight, but it that’s your style that’s your style.Try a wider angel lens next time just to see how it suits, maybe.
figParticipantThanks eas. I do have other shots from a wider angle and the main photographer (my dad) had most of the standard shots. I was trying to add a few more “interesting” shots to the day. Tried to get some candids and closeups. Not sure if they’ll like them, I suppose I’ll find out soon :-)
BTW I followed that link to “99 Remarkable Photography Portfolios” thanks, gonna get nothing done for the rest of the day!!!
ossie13ParticipanteasParticipanta father son team eh? that’s interesting.
Out of curiosity how long has your father been doing wedding photography and how long until you take over the family business? :D
The reason why I like the 3rd and 4th shots is the little girl, daughter I assume. I KNOW the BnG will love them for the same reason.
I should put a “caution” on that signature link.
figParticipantMy dad’s been doing a few weddings a year part time since he was but a pup. He’s never really done it full time and this was his first one totally in digital. I think that’s why I was there to make sure we covered it between us. It went well and I think my dad really appreciated the ease of digital. He has been made redundant now I’m hoping he’ll want to continue on the weddings as a fulltime gig.
Luckily the wedding was small and the BnG were the easiest going people you could meet. Very nice.

Cheers Phil, I’m not a Photoshop man but I found something similar here http://gimpology.com/submission/view/authentic_vintage_effect/.
PeteMcDMemberGreat set- I also like the reportage feel you’ve got going here. Interesting eas should comment they are a little tight, I was gonna say you could ahve gone even tighter on some- def a case of each to their own.
I have my first wedding as a second shooter tomo so I am both excited and a little unsure what to expect!
