Decay

Once someones dream.. their home, keeping them warm and safe. Now, decay!
PeteTheBlokeMemberI like the grainy finish, and the B+W conversion is near-perfect (to my untrained eye). The subject itself is engaging: the broken panes; the rot; the unseen room. I find the reflections a little distracting, but also intriguing: are the houses opposite in good repair; are there neighbours who have to live next to this wreck?
If I have one objection, it’s the way that the window frames and lintel are not square with the picture frame. Maybe a slightly bigger crop would have emphasised this less? The curve in the lintel looks almost like barrel distortion, and the perspective falls away towards the top of the picture – maybe the camera was pointing upwards slightly?

Well spotted Pete. It’s shot at the widest angle I had (24mm) at the time and as I couldnt get bang central with the window there was a tilt upwards, hence the perspective. I was hoping that I was close enough that the converging lines wouldn’t be too noticeable :? As for the reflections, I never even noticed them myself until you pointed them out. I can’t remember if there were neighbouring houses, but this house is right smack bang in the middle of Trim town so i’d imagine there were.
jb7ParticipantBet you can’t wait for Vista-
Seriously though,
If I had this one, I would have entered it into the competition, co-incidentally, under the title of decay.spooky.

sometimes its the buildings that are suffering from distortion-
ciaranParticipantjb7ParticipantIts the new windows operating system-
Maybe you could put up a screensaver sized version of this one, I’d quite like to have windows on my mac-

Ahhhh… I knew what Vista was but didn’t make the link to the window
stasberMemberI love high contrast & grain in black & whites and decay is a great topic for that (mind you high contrast & grain in my books is excusable pretty much anywhere  )
I like the subject and execution and the choice of framing/cropping. Converging lines is a tough one to overcome alright, the top of the image is spot on and the right side gives it away the most, however it doesn’t put me off (merely an observation). Tis why you should always keep a 12 foot ladder handy in your kit bag, like. I’d have had the dilemma of leaving the image ‘dark & dingy’ or ‘stark and bright’ and would have opted for ‘stark & bright’, so would prefer to see more contrast with cleaner, crisper whites (use ColourCatcher next time  ).
I had a little play with your image to see if I could come to something. Interestingly it bought out the reflections of the houses opposite a bit more (a plus IMO – adds context of community), and a little extra sharpen added a bit of grit to the window sill/lintel/whateveritscalled. It’s as straight as it can be so I didn’t straighten or crop any further (I think your crop is spot on).
Let me know if you’d like to see – I respect your Edit my Pics decision & signature.

Sure post it on :) I’d be interested in seeing it.

does it work for you?
If I have to be honest it’s a little too contrasty, but it has made me look at mine and see it as a little grey/flat. Perhaps something in between :?:
stasberMemberYup, quite possible. This is the idea anyway, to bring it out a bit more, make it a bit starker.
PeteTheBlokeMember‘Fraid my vote is for Ciaran’s version. I think the sombre mood is lost when the midtones are kicked out. Also the high contrast almost adds a sparkle which is contrary to the feel of the image.
EddieParticipantGood image, i think you could make a good series of images from scenes like this. Sinister wind series or something like that. Use slow shutter speeds to allow the curtains to move.
