if you’re looking for an almost fail safe system gor for a 5 disk RAID setup. is a touch pricey but risk of data loss is very very small. Drobo does one I wish I had
A single RAID device on its own is not a backup solution – though it can form part of one. Drobos are nice, but slightly overpriced RAID boxes.
RAID is intended for resilience (e.g. to keep an online system up and running while you change a failed disk) – not for backup.
So, a RAID device can be part of your backup solution, but you still need one or more separate backups – ideally with at least one copy in a separate location.
Otherwise – all you have is a false sense of security and no backup
I say save the money and use it on a decent backup service like Jungle Disk with Amazon S3. Amazon store three copies of you data in separate datacenters, and Jungle Disk handles the incremental backup and scheduling. I use it to store over 65Gigs of photographs, it costs me 10 Euro or so a month, and I don’t ever worry about my house burning down and losing everything.
