Decent macro lens for Canon 400D required

fguihenParticipant
I need a good macro lens for my canon 400D, preferably one that wont melt my credit card. can anyone make some recommendations?
paulParticipantCanon 100mm f/2.8 macro is a great lens. Well worth considering.
fguihenParticipantanything more along the lines of 200 quid? im sure thats a great lens, but way out of my price bracket.
SanderMemberI’ve been using a Sigma 17-70 lens for it, or you could use the 70-300 APO i guess… i don’t know too much about it though
fguihenParticipanthmmm. il give the sigma a go. Think il get the Canon 250D and 500D achromatic close up lens’s. i have the nikon equivalents and they are great for this kind of work, but with a rather shallow DOF
SanderMemberHmm if you wanna see the quality, I posted a pic in the Macro section last week, It is still on the first page, that was taken with a tripod in Carlingford :) taken with the 17-70
insertnamehereParticipantI’m using the Canon EF-S 60mm macro, which I find pretty good. good focal length for portraits too.
JMcLParticipantFor a proper macro (ie 1:1) lens, the Sigma 105mm or Tamron 90mm will be cheaper options than the Canon, though they’re probably still in the region of €350-€400.
If you’re strapped for cash, the Sigma APO 70-300mm is an ok performer for closeup, rather than macro. It’ll do 1:2, but the minimum focusing distance of 95cm can make it difficult to work with in certain circumstances, and you’ll have a minimum aperture of f5.6.
Another budget option for proper macros is the nifty fifty (pretty much a must have lens anyway at the price) and a set of extension tubes – should come in for well under 200 if you shop around

richiehatchMemberThe sigma 105mm f2.8 can be had for 340 dollars (around €230)… If ye knew anyone traveling over it could be worth getting. I have it and think its a great lens…! Also keep an eye on The Buy and Sell website as it often comes up for sale there…!

fguihenParticipantcool. il keep a look out for the sigma 105mm. ive decided also that for the time being il simply shorten teh distance from my subject when using the sigma 70-300DG by getting a canon 250D and 500d achromatic close up lens’s. i have the nikon equivalents and they work a treat in such cases.
scasMemberjust try some extention tubes first-the kenko ones are cheap and as good as the canons( no glass to worry about) and they retain autofocus, not that you’ll use it much. and if you want then buy a dedicated macro on which you can still use the tubes. all the macro lens are amazing pieces of kit, the best being the tamron 180, sigma 150 and the cannon 100(ignoring the 180 canon cos you’d need to sell the house to buy one)
SteveFEMemberOld skool manual focus macros 2nd hand often fall within your budget (allow €20 or so for an adaptor off evilBay as well).
The best macros I possess are both legendary: a Tamron SP 90mm f/2.5 bought for about €60 on the bay (supersharp, 1:2 mag ratio) and a Micro-Nikkor 105/2.8 AFD (even more supersharp, 1:1, but donated by a kindly relative so €0.00 :-)
For macro you’ll always want to fine tune the focus manually, so you may as well have a lens that lets you do it properly.
