My Canon 20D lets me set a custom function to switch on ‘decision data’, and is ‘off’ by default. My understanding is that with the aid of another piece of software it allows one to determine whether an image is original or not, essentially proving – as I see it anyway – copyright.
Does anyone have a better grasp on decision data? Does anyone out there [on this forum] use it (how/why)? Is it of any use to an enthusiast like me – I don’t normally sell my images, however I enjoy photographing live events and some of the images will invariably end up in various hands, so prompting the thought of ‘you never know’.
Decision data isn’t really used to prove ownership of copyright data, although I guess it could be used for that. But supposing someone else was using your camera?
The main use for decision data is in the area of law enforcement, such as forensic photography or when digital images are to be submitted in a court. The decision data verifies that the image is original and hasn’t been tampered with in any way – it requires specialised software to read it.
