DSLR for sure, you’ll soon pick up the tech stuff.

Dont rule out EBAY, you could get a new D80 for about £350 body only, and an 18-55mm and a 70-300mm lens for about £150 for both.

Or a new D40 for £220 on Amazon UK right now! Use the change for a 70-300VR tele!

Stig, can’t speak for the Canon lovers out there, but I’ve only recently taken up this hobby and bought a Nikon D40 – great beginner DSLR, however I soon upgraded to a D200 – have it now 3 weeks – learn something new everyday as there are no auto programmed modes. The nikons are great, very easy to use and packed with featutres to let you develop at your own pace. Ihear the D90 and the D300 are brilliant but your budget might not stretch that far

i still have an olympus sp 550 uz which ive now decided to sell again. so if anyone is interested , let me know. the camera is fine, just i cannot get my head around its menus etc. never really took to it.

i see on warehouseexpress they have a Nikon D60 with 18-55 ED II Lens Digital SLR Camera for 291 stg and
a Nikon D60 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55 VR Lens for 315 stg….

whats the difference in the 2 lenses?

i seen in the argos that they were selling the Nikon D40 for €375….is it worth my while buying this to get started or should i go for something a little higher in spec?

it seems like it might be good enough to start off with, but i dont want something next to useless :D !
    thanks in advance,
    Aidan.

Toasty, Next to useless is certainly not what I’d call a D40! The only hitch with the D40 is the fact that some older Nikon lenses wont autofocus with it, see below for details. With the 18-200 VR lens, you have a 10x optical zoom for handiness, and great image quality. A great do it all well combination.

Stig, the difference in those lenses is the Vibration Reduction function, which helps reduce camera shake. Great for handheld shots of still subjects at slow shutter speeds.

From Ken rockwell’s site (he loves teh D40 btw)

“My D40 only autofocuses with the latest AF-S lenses, and also the the older, professional, AF-I lenses.

You’ll have to focus manually with traditional AF lenses, which means forget about older lenses except macros (I always focus those manually) and fisheyes and ultrawides (easy to focus).

Every AF lens made in the past 20 years meters and exposes perfectly; it’s just the autofocus which won’t work.

Every manual focus lens made since 1959 also works fine, if you don’t mind focusing by hand and guessing at the exposure.

This is a smaller deal than it sounds, since the included kit lens and other modern lenses obsolete the older lenses I thought I might be using with this.

This is why I never waste my money on off-brands. All the Nikon lenses I’ve been buying since the late 1990s, like my 24-85mm AF-S, 80-200mm AF-S and ten-year-old 400mm f/2.8 AF-I work perfectly.

    More at Lens Compatibility. “
