I can’t decide if I like either of these compositions…but I love the deer..so can you give me any suggestions? Sorry about the sky..will save that for later. Thanks so much, Shar

I’ll be rough and rude :) They don’t work for me. I think, it’s the dull sky and the dull lights on the whole scene. I could imagine that if you were very close to the ground on the second one and found a different perspective, there would be some interest in the image, but I find that rock very boring for the first sight to be honest. Perhaps you would have to spend much more time walking around and looking for different views. If it’s so close to you, why not try and find a day with some dramatic or interesting clouds?

Sorry for being so critical! Keep up shooting, the more the better!

Yeah, sorry Sharon but I thought you had incorrectly spelled Dear in your title. I barely noticed the deer in this one. As Randomway said the sky has really blown this one. The positioning and framing I could live with but it seems bland.

Unfortunately, bird/animal photography is the one part of our hobby where the argument about gear not making a big difference is untrue. It makes a huge difference. You need at least a 300mm lens and then, that’s often just the start of the spending.

The deer are a bit small. It looks like that they weren’t going to let you get any closer either …. 2 or 3 of them were watching you.

It looks to me that if you had shot in RAW, then this exposure would be fine. You’ve exposed for the shadows and kept the brights probably within 1.5 stops. That means you would be able to bring down the bright areas in Photoshop to get a nicer looking image. It’s this power that makes shooting JPEG a non-goer for me. There is detail in the sky … it just needs to be brought back.

But theres nothing stopping you dropping in a sky later on  I feel the same as previous comments.if it was the rock formation you were photographing then the Deer would have been a bonus, but a good sky and the sun in the right angle would make a huge difference.Try going back to that location early morning, late evening ( dont know how dangerous it is??) and see what the light is doing. Then you can make up your mind what kind of shot you would like.Add a few puffy clouds and there you are.Are those wild yellow flowers on the bottom right, or weeds.??

Ok guys……I was half asleep the first time I read this, so now I am looking again.

Thanks a million for bothering to reply. I wouldn’t have put it out here if I really didn’t care. I knew it was a sad one, but I was so taken by the deer, I was hoping for a miracle.

Fantastic clear advice, and well taken. By the way, I haven’t got an editing program that is decent yet, and then I need to learn to use it when it get it.

randomway~ you are absolutely right. I hated that rock too, the way I caught it, anyway, and just kept wondering what others thought too. You confirmed my suspicion  As for the weather, it was the first opportunity I have had to get outside of my backgarden since the camera arrived. It was a bad idea.

irishwonkafan~ LOL hopefully I spell better than I shoot. I’ve been spelling for far longer. btw..I need to pm you about the wind things. Will get on that.

joe_elway~ I had just gotten out of the car and was fiddling with some flower shots and they appeared in the clearing. I was soooo unprepared. You are right too, they did watch me, you are experienced! Thanks for the technical advice. I admit I tried to set the camera for one size fits all ~landscape~ function and I messed it up. I am listening to you. I can’t wait to use RAW and photoshop.

steelydan~I will go back. In another post JB7 pointed out to me that this location is photographed quite often, and I should work harder to find an unusual and appealing perspective. I never thought of that because I never go there, and I don’t buy Landscape books about Colorado LOL. I have a million about Ireland!

Thanks again everyone, I’ll be back

    Sharon

Practice makes perfect Sharon, we have all fumbled with buttons while the perfect shot vanishes.
After a while you won’t even have to look at the camera the same way you stopped looked at the gear
shift after a few weeks of driving.

As far as the perspective and composition goes again it’s just practice. If you are anything like me
you start to see the world in frames, it just becomes second nature. The more you shoot the better it gets.

Also once you get your hands on a copy of PS or similar you will start to see how you can improve a shot that may have previously
    seemed like a certain delete.

The above shots are a tad weak but there is potential for crops and with a little PS work you could bring back the sky and boost the colours.

Have fun shooting and keep posting. I like to think I have improved a lot since I started posting on PI.

I have to confess… I haven’t seen the deers :D , that’s why I was talking about the composition, the sky and stuff like that. Yeah, unfortunately wild animals don’t really like being photographed, so it’s a tough going and you almost always need a huge lens or a lot of luck to catch a good moment and get it close. Anyway, it’s never a bad idea going out from the backgarden. The more you fail, the faster you learn. We are all here to see each others faults, that’s the best in a critique forum.

    just reading these~~~

    byrne5012~ Thanks for your encouragement.
So many of the things you just said, others have told me as well. I am hoping that eventually it all comes together..the photo and the photoshop. I downloaded a trial of elements that has since expired. I played with it, and it was like learning a language beyond the simplest tools. Also, it is kinda nice that I do seem more alert to my surroundings, maybe more distracted in my driving though

randomway~Hey, thanks for that clarification, the deer were teeny  Beyond that, I am just delighted that people as talented and accomplished as you are willing to take a look at mine own stuffs. :D

Thats why we are all here Sharon.Everyone looks at in image different ways. And everyone will see something that others wont.WE ALL learn from photographers submitting their photos and WE ALL take advice from it ,not only the Photographer that took the shot..

Well said John. That just about encompasses the whole point of the site in my mind.

I know you’ll be producing sterling shots in no time Shar. Especially as how you are lucky enough to have that kind of quality landscape in practically your back garden.

steelydan~hey, I have no ego and you can always count on me to throw out here all kinds of questions and photos that I’d like help with  I’m amazed at how much info I’d picked up by just hanging around here that I didn’t even realise would be useful later.
This is such a copescetic site. Any question about photography can be answered here.
You helped me choose my equipment when you spent your evening weighing the advantages of each my options for me( I am sure you could have been sleeping.) I decided on Olympus, different from you Mr. Canon shooter, so I know I can count on people being fair and unbiased in the advice and comments they offer.Thank you John!

Expresbro..I promise.. I will eventually produce shots of Colorado that will make your jaw drop and force your behind onto the airplane for a visit/phototour  Thanks you 8)
