Saw this little birdie perched on a twig over the River Blackwater on my
way home a couple of evenings ago. Poor light, but I did my best. Any ideas
on what it might be?
Tis a Grey Wagtail by the looks of it. Saw one for the first time mylsef a week or so ago (it’s amazing what you start noticing when you start looking for it). Found near water, old bridges and sand pits. Likely to nest in gaps of stonework in old structures.
Also referred to as the lesser known, yellow breasted, grey backed duck ;-)
For telephoto shots in poor light these are remarkably good.
Lovely bird, isn’t he? Not renowned for staying still for long, but I see you fixed that problem with the fishing line you tied to his feet. You might have had the decency to clone it out.
Unfortunately my capture doesn’t really show off how vibrant that yellow
breast really is – like a cross between a wagtail and a canary. Gorgeous little
bird.
I couldn’t even see the fishing line until I opened the image up on my
laptop later, but I’ll be keeping that idea in mind for future shots Pete…
Rob, now that you’re a nature lover cum bird watcher type of chap you might want to collect any fishing line you see abandoned by the river and cut it up or burn it. It’s very eco-unfriendly stuff.
