Delkin have released a gizmo that cleans your dSLR sensor

It’s a bit pricy at $189 (expect the same in euros) but if you have a couple of bodies and regularly change lenses outdoors then this might do the job

And here’s another, cheaper solution based on band-aids http://www.dust-aid.com/

I use a Sensor Sweep to clean any dust from my sensor. For anyone who doesn’t know, it siplke uses static electricity from a simple brush to attract the dust away from the sensor. You don’t even have to make contact with the sensor for it to work, just get close enough for the static charge to remove the dust.

I use the Copperhill method myself and have no qualms about touching the sensor. It is necessary to touch it to remove some of the more stubborn residue. That scope thing looks like a bit of a gimmick. Taking an out of focus shot at a small aperture of a white surface or the sky will let you see how much muck is on the sensor. Bring it into PS and do an “auto levels” and you’ll be amazed. A couple of swipes with the swab and all is cleared in no time. Here are a few shots I took some time ago.

The dark hues are just the colours of the sky.

I have a HUGE dust bunny on my sensor and I’m finally considering cleaning it myself. But I’m well and truly BRICKING it… so who in the Dublin area would be willing to hold my hand through a first cleaning process? :)

I know that feeling. Gimmie a shout if you want – I use Eclipse solution and pec pads. Bricked it, but soon realised theres this big myth that you can easily damage your sensor. Take correct precautions and follow instructions, and it’s easy!

Personally I think the delkin solution is total overkill for a problem that doesn’t exist – just buy some pads annd fluid for EUR40!

This looks like the sensor swabs with an inverted lens! I’ve used the sensor swab kit available in Bermingham cameras on my D200 (the wet method) with no probs, was pretty nervous first time but now its a breeze, no fear of doing damage with the sensor swabs once you give it a blow first to ensure theres no (god forbid!) specks of sand or anything. Go for it Ciaran!

(edit: think mine is the eclipse kit as well..)

    Ciaran,

It really isn’t anything like as nerve wrecking as it seems. What method are you going to use? There is a very thorough tutorial of the Copperhill method here: http://www.copperhillimages.com/index.php?pr=tutorials When you do it once you will wonder what all the bricks were for, honestly :)

If you use fluid only use 2 DROPS!!! Use any more and it’ll get stuck behind your IR filter, and you’ll not be getting rid of that any time soo. Use 1-2 drops and it’s easy and safe though.

Have you heard that any acrylic brush will clean your sensor…..they all conduct a static charge. For the ?100 brush set you could do the same for a fiver!

    Ciaran,

I was nervous the first time I cleaned my sensor. I didn’t want to use any swabs ro fluids, that was too scary for me. I much preferred the dry option. It can be fiddly when cleaning but once you get it done you’ll be kicking yourself at how easy it was and how you should have done it long ago!
I’m in Dublin and could lend you my cleaning set sometime, so you could see if the dry option works for you?
I usually check my sensor every now and again pretty much the same way as Valentia, using a white or light coloured background and shooting at a small aperture.

Cheers guys.. well I’ll gladly take you/anyone up on their offer :) I live and work in west Dublin, so anyone close to that? If not I’m happy to travel :) So first one thats free/close and I’ll jump at the opportunity. I’m more than happy to fix anyone up for what ever swabs/liquid is used.
