desert racing – off road motorsport

I had the oppertunity to shoot at the SNORE desert off road race last weekend. This was a friend of mine competing in it, hense the mascot on the front of the truck.
mervifwdcParticipantsean1098MembermarkcapilitanParticipantI think the whole point of shooting motorsport in the desert (such as Dakar Rally, safari rally) is to show the environment more than just the car. A wide shot showing some of the location would have been nicer. Dakar Rally was number 2 on my list of things to shoot (motorsport), very difficult to do though, and will probably never get round to it now. (Monaco gp was number 1, done it twice!).
mervifwdcParticipantI’ve a few nice wide ones with long dust trails, but these are all I’ve dug out yet as they were my buddies car. I was down at 1/200 the whole weekend to show any amount of blur or speed, so I found that strange. Hope that I picked the right speed!
Once I get back I’ll put up a few more.

markcapilitanParticipantFor bog standard head-on shots, it’s 1/500. For pans, start at 1/250 and work down when you’ve nailed it.
When you want to do slowys and other stuff, it’s whatever you like!mervifwdcParticipantA bit wider. second one is not cropped at all. I thought these were too wide!
Merv.
Jay KingParticipantI really like the first image… I think it’s a good shot of the racing truck and you don’t need much more of the landscape to show that it’s quite barren. I feel that it needs a contrast boost though – to really make the truck ‘pop’. At the moment it’s kinda lost in the dust and terrain, infact the logo is the thing that stands out the most there… Just up the contrast and then if needed drop the exposure or brightness a little… And I’m sure the vechicle would stand out even more with a logo/watermark that wasn’t as strong…
markcapilitanParticipantThese 2 would be better, but you need to work on composition. (don’t crop to fix!!) Next time, frame the car at the bottom or sides (if suitable) of the frame. Most motorsport shots don’t work well with the car slap bang in the centre…goes for most things in fact…rule of thirds!!
jb7ParticipantI’ve been following this one with interest from the start-
I’d have to agree with Jay-
Number one is very good indeed, but could maybe do with a crop from the bottom-It would be so easy to add some contrast,
but I quite like the sunbleached look-I think its a very good image;
if Tamiya ever made the model,
this would look good on the box-And the leprechaun is great-

I’ve been looking through a few, and thinking about the cropping. I’m big into the rule of thirds, believe it works, and also big into leaving way more space in front of a vehicle or person instead of behind them in anything related to action. BUT. In this case, the thing that makes the shot is the dust cloud behind the car, and normal cropping cuts it off. That makes it a little tricky.
Thoughts?

dejosheaParticipantSome nice photos. I think the close ones are better, wide angle can be good, but hard to find the right angle for it. As for where to crop a photo with the dust, I think having the front of the car near a side of the photo and have alot of the dust left in. Its like my drifting shots I try to get the car to one side with the alot of smoke behind it.
