Designing a brand new photography accessory
-
kavanadbParticipant
Just a note to the admins, if you think this is off topic by all means delete it, i don’t want to cause a fuss but I am looking for feedback (and not in a blatentselfpromotion kind of way, hopefully!)
I’m currently designing a new DSLR camera accessory for a thesis in product design, I don’t want to give away too much about what it will be, it’s certainly early days in terms of the design but It’s probably going to be some sort of lightweight stabilising device. If i get it right it’s going to be clever and it’s going to work (and it’ll be real too, I’ll be building many, many prototypes).
At the moment I’m talking to tonnes of photographers in real life and through the web and as part of my research I’ve made a little questionnaire that I think is super easy, no hard questions, it’ll take 30 seconds max!
If you own a DSLR, are curious, interested and just feel like being nice please, please lend me a hand and fill it out!

You have my thanks,

Can’t wait-
btw, check out the pi straps…
SeoirseMemberDesmond,
I don’t want to come across s being a bit of an old fart
(which I am  ) but….why is it limited to owners of DSLR’s?Like, if one owned a film slr or a medium format film camera or,
god forbid… a large format camera is that not applicable?God knows we are probably in need of as much or more ergonomic support
than digital users. :( :lol:Best of luck with your venture though
I genuinely hope it goes really well for you!bingbongbiddleyParticipantjb7ParticipantSeoirse wrote:

people refuse to talk to you,
and apart from a few conspiratorial shakes of the head, you’re hardly acknowledged at all.Still, as long as there’s a few tools in the garage,
and some stuff to chop up and stick back together again,
the antisocial element might not rock the boat too much-Throw me some more walnut, and I’ll be quiet for a while-

just thought I’d quote this, before somebody else did…

Don’t talk to Seoirse, I’ve seen him lurking around with a Hasselblad.
For the OP: Filled out the questionnaire, glad to help. Hope it’s going to be a better camera strap that holds the camera to your eyes, sets the cam and releases shutter when a good picture is in scope…
kavanadbParticipantYou are all wonderful :) can’t thank you enough!
glad to see interested responses, ill have to come back to show you
some of the prototypes when theyre made (it’ll be a few months at least!),
I know my opening paragraph sounded ambitious so I’ll have to do well
now, theres every chance if i get a good enough model ill be plodding
around from shop to shop in Dublin getting opinions from retail managers.
If I’m reeally lucky I might be able to set up a little showing in a shop where
I can get customer feedback right there and then, if that happens I’ll have
to post details here!jb7 – smartass answers allowed! and i can’t find anything on pi straps when i
google it, I’m very interested though, have you a link by any chance?Seoirse – unfortunately there’s something of an unsatisfactory answer to
your question – fact is the thesis requires a huge chunk of market research
and analysis, the usefulness of the product is just as important as the $$$
it’ll be making. That sounds terrible, i know, it is an important factor though. It might be fair to say that the amount of people using medium
and large format cameras is quite small and although there probably is good
money (and satisfaction!) to be made designing for them I probably couldn’t
get as good research from what could possibly be described as a niche market
(hope that doesnt cut deep!). I simply have far too little personal experience
and know just a handful of people who have used such wonderful contraptions..On the other hand though I shouldnt have ruled out film SLRs and possibly
rangefinders too, my angle for the design is the fact that DSLRs have suddenly
become hugely and unexpectedly popular in the last couple of years and I think
theres a gap for a portable product that helps get a stable picture without
compromising on speed and perspective (my biggest irk with the popular
gorillapods). basically any camera with the basic shape of an SLR that is heavy
enough to need a strap is fair game!jb7Participantkavanadb wrote:

jb7ParticipantkavanadbParticipantlol, you got me. sounds like a nice name, I immediately thought the mathematical
constant pi..And the old string and washer trick, ho ho. certainly something I have looked into in my
research, did a few vibration tests on it the other week, worked out well enough. Its a nice
totally out of the box idea but it would need massive ergonomic redesign if i went down
that route, and i’m not down any route yet tbh :)miki gParticipantDone…..That was tough.
I Hope it works out sucessfully for you. Good to see someone being inventive these days. I thought up of a gadget myself yesterday just for fun, so simple an idea, had it designed in 5 minutes and it works. :lol:aoluainParticipant
