Ciaran… this is a seriously powerful and moving image… to me the photography doesnt matter… why give a sh*t about the cloning… whatever is in there isnt going to reduce the impact… not going to take sides as to whether it should have been posted or not as I can see both sides of the story…! As artists (and thats what we are) impact/reaction is what we want. Whether people like or dislike my images is irrelevant… that recation is my aim…! This is a successful shot…! Well done
Richie
RobMemberCiaran,
Thanks for your response to my post, and for taking my comments in the spirit in which they were intended.
I should hate to be mistaken for some bleeding heart socialist do-gooder and my principal reason for writing what
I did was to try to stimulate a little debate about the power of imagery.Sometimes, as Richie pointed out, the photography doesn’t matter. This is a perfect case in point. Your image needs
no fancy schmancy processing to evoke a serious gut reaction from the viewer, and that’s what makes it so powerful,
so successful. Debate about the image? What debate can there be? In this case the technicalities just don’t come
into play. The image works.Regarding the desire to have a wider audience, that is entirely up to you and I respect your feelings on that. My own
inclination, had I the talent to spot and capture such powerful and evocative street scenes as you often manage,
would be to circulate them a little more discerningly. I’m certain there are agencies out there, not necessarily newspapers,
would would be only too glad of shots like your to use in fundraising campaigns, etc. If you don’t care to make money
from this image why not submit it to Focus Ireland, or The Simon Community? My opinions and critiques are just that; opinions and critiques, and they’re mine. Whether or not anyone finds them of
value doesn’t really matter at the end of it all. Sometimes I just like to vent. And in case anyone misunderstood my
initial post which was merely intended to provoke some debate, I actually love this image. In fact, I’d go so far as
to say that, as far as I’m concerned, this is the single most powerful image yet posted here on Photography Ireland.Well done Ciaran, and keep up the sterling work. You’ve raised the bar with this one.
Rob.
ciaranParticipantI’ve been in touch with both agencies before in relation to trying to setup a shoot with them. Ideally I’d have loved to accompany their workers out on to the streets or into the homes and hostels that they run, trying to capture some images. I offered them both this as a completely free service in which they could have every image (that was exposed correctly/in focus etc). I said they could have complete license over how and where they used the images, once there was some recognition. In one case, the discussions got quite far but broke down when it came to ownership (i.e. they wanted ownership and I had to license the use of the shots from them.. couldn’t use them on my website etc) and the other they were worried about their clientele. So in the end, I just went out and shot on the streets myself.
GrahamBParticipant“First and foremost, for me this is just another image. Like I mentioned in previous posts, I don’t view homeless people, ugly people, old people, young people, beautiful people any different.”
Ciaran,
this comment has erked me slightly. I know what you are saying and in general I believe it’s true.
I think my issue with this comment in relation to this picture is that it’s not “just another image” to some people anyway.
In my opinion it is a very powerful and thought provoking image that deserves more than the treatment it was given.
I know I am ranting a little and I know it is your image your views on this image should be respected above all else.
Sometimes the camera does capture just another image but sometimes the camera captures something that will actually
get people of their arses. A picture of a homeless person is one thing ( and you have some excellent shots on your site )
but a picture of a homeless child crying and shaking uncontrollably is a different thing entirely. maybe it is this fact that has caused
people to be a little more vocal on this particular shot.It is a stunning picture. It was captured perfectly and you have definitely earned my respect on this one.

erinParticipantPhotography has many purposes? we can used it to show all the beauty in the world, but it is also a powerful way to show the truth and the unpleasant reality. It may blow you, but will definitely cause some reactions, and sometimes that?s necessary.
Ciaran? strong, powerful image? it breaks the conventionalisms, but it works like a message.
