I saw a great photo of this on flickr and thought I’d give it a go cause I love the emotion of it. Not sure which one (if any) is the best for the title and has the most emotion?

mehfestoParticipantI like the first best. They’re all technically sound though. Can’t fault them in clarity or compisition, lighting or anything else.
Personally, I don’t think his face is emotional enough though. I’d have like a furrowed or sloping eg: /. . brows and a tighter grip on the glass. On that, I’d turn the bottle slightly. Make it less in your face. It kinda looks like an ad for Jameson there!
Other than that though, it’s quite a strong picture.PixelleMemberYes, agree with turning the bottle.
Bit of a mismatch, having a french, em, missive and an Irish drink.sm323fMemberi’d agree with turning the bottle slightly…unless you send it to Jameson for a possible ad they could use.
the first is the best for me, gives the best expression due to the tones and shadows.
nice idea…
good work!AllinthemindParticipantNice idea, I like the pose/expresssion, just too many props. The glass is enough wihtout the bottle and note. Like a good meal, too many ingredients confuses the flavour.

figParticipantThanks guys. See what you mean about the bottle now. Sticks out a mile when it’s shown to you :-) The photo I was copying was a much better version and had the letter in French so I thought I’d just keep the elements the same.

RobMemberOkay then, you can hate me for this if you want, but I’m going to
be completely honest and say that I absolutely hate these…I don’t know what it is, but I just don’t think that ‘despair’ is one of
those emotions that can be ‘manufactured’ convincingly; put De Niro in your
pictures and I’d still hate them. I even hate the one on flickr that you’re
trying to emulate or replicate…Let me explain…
Real despair is uncomfortable to look at; we’ve all felt it at some time
or other viewing press images from war zones, famine ravaged third
world countries, or even in certain types of street photography. It can
only ever be captured candidly – right place, right time. For me, any
attempt to portray an emotion as harrowing and heart-rending as despair
in a still image can only ever result in something that looks contrived and
pretentious. Unless it’s real, there can’t be empathy, or sympathy…Apologies if this seems harsh, but there’s enough genuine despair in the
lives of so many of our fellow human beings to negate any need to pretend
that there’s even more…Rob.
figParticipantNo worries, I see your point. The original photo made me think a little without actually upsetting me. I think I liked in the same way I like to watch a sad film rather than a documentary about real suffering. Sometimes it’s just too hard to look at. (Sorry I’m a wuss)
