Developing C41 at home

    Hi guys,

Just looking for some feedback from those of you who may have developed your own C41 at home, and your experiences.

I’m just wondering how much more is involved (than say b&w), perhaps time and money-wise, and ultimately I guess if you find it worth it.

I’ve developed my own black and white, am quite comfortable with that, and have all the kit (changing bag, reels, etc) for that, by the way.

    Thoughts and feedback appreciated :)

I dev my own C41. Find it easy with the rollei kit below. No harder than deving B&W. The chemicals go off quicker though so make sure you have a good few roles todo within say a month

    Have fun

Cheers for the info Martin – can I ask you what made you choose the Rollei kit over the Tetanal one, and if there are maybe any substantial differences in the method of processing, with one kit or the other ?

I am imagining temperature control is more important with C41 than b&w, and wonder what peoples experience, or rather how fussy it is..

yup I do it meself too in the kitchen sink with the rollei kit.

v.easy. 1st time result was great.

you just have to pay more attention to mixing and timing than B+W developing

Here is some from last year shot on my Fujica GW690

Nice shots, and imagine those 6×9 negatives must look really nice!

I see you’re the second to recommend the Rollei kit, any reason you chose that one ? From what I can see the main difference between the Rollei and Tetanal kits are capacity, with something that is lower capacity looking attractive given the shorter shelf like of the chemicals, unless I’m missing something..

By the way, wasn’t sure from reading the description of the product – is it a 3 bath kit ?

“Rollei kit over the Tetanal one”

I didn’t do much research, the Rollei kits get good reviews and thats what they had in stock in Gunns. I normally get the smallest kit that makes up 500ml of developer. I normally get around 10 roles out of it and then throw it out, I could dev more roles with it before throwing it out but I dont shoot enough colour.

    is it a 3 bath kit ?

Its 4 baths, Colour developer, bleacher, fixier and Stabilizer. Its advised that you presoak the film also

The instructions with the kit are excellent, just follow them exactly and you cant go wrong

    Have fun

yea the rollei is a 4 bath jobie!

i didnt research it TBH the rollei was the first one I came across!

yea the 6×9 negs are fantastic, and the camera is a monster of a rangefinder, gets a good bit of attention when
    i’m out shooting too !

Cheers lads, thanks for the heads up, the Rollei kit seems like a nice one, will perhaps drop Peter a line and see what the difference between that and the Tetanal one, when it comes time to pick one up. First got to work on exposing some colour negatives, as I was curious to know what was involved before shooting some colour.

Last question – whats the story with the chemicals – do you mix them up, and re-use them, or does the kit make up enough for single-use batches, and also how do you prefer to control the temperature?

Cheers for all the feedback already :)

I mix them up and put them into 4 bottles. You reuse the same chemicals.

Temp wise i bring the developer temp to 38 degrees C and dev for I think its 3:15 minutes from memory. The dev time is quick so i dont try to keep it at 38 you would only need to do that i think if you were using a longer dev time and lower temp. Thats how i do it anyhow and never had a problem.

    same as Martin

just mix them up store in seperate bottles
    and reuse them.

the instructions will state for how many films the chemicals will develop

here is a link to the rollei kit dev. info.

    Hi Damien,

I have not developed colour neg film so can offer no experienced advice except a friend of mine who does a lot of it once recommended this to me:

As far as I know temperature control is very important, but as some of the other guys have reported, they manage fine without so IDK.

Cheers guys, appreciate it. Would definitely consider doing it with the equipment I use for my black and white white, as it seems good results can be had.

Don’t have anything to develop just yet, so have a bit of time to consider my options, but will report back on my experiences should I decide to do my own C41.

Thanks, once again for all the advice and feedback :)
