Did you know………..

Not Pete the blokeParticipant
When you buy a Canon L lens, it comes in a grey cloth carry bag. The grey bag is 18% grey, so you can include it in a test shot and then use it to set white balance by clicking on the bag with the middle eye dropper.
I have had a couple of those bags in the last 18 months and never knew that. :oops:Ross
j_machaleParticipantearthairfireParticipantSo that’s what the bag is for!! lol.
I’ve left all my bags in the boxes they came in, as I never really saw the point of putting my lens in a bag… in a bag…
Useful tip! Where do you dig this stuff up from?!
Tim
GCPParticipantI must look at the bag I have. Could have sworn it was black though. Must look again.

My 100-400 L pouch is beige … 18% beige maybe?
lol
there’s always one…
Alan RossiterParticipantThere’s an interesting device that I happened on when looking for tutorials on Lightroom that you might find of interest. It’s called a Whibal and is a plastic card that’s made of 18% grey material with a white and black label. Take your first photo of this in the conditions and if you’re using lightroom use the readings from this device to sync the WB settings and exposure to all other raw photos you took in those lighting conditions. It’s worth a look and for ?32 incl postage you can’t do much wrong.
Alan.
18% beige…Aidan I despair, I really do!

If I believe what I’m told, there might be three or four knocking around in this head of mine. :?

I bought a set of these but still prefer to use the Lastolite Xpo Balanc below.

ThorstenMemberI’ve been extolling the virtues of WhiBal on PI in the past. It’s very quick and easy to use and works for both RAW and JPEG shooters (although the preferred format is RAW). You don’t have to use it at the beginning of a shoot; you can use it in the middle or at the end too. All you’re doing is taking a reference shot from which to do a “click-whitebalance” reading from later in your chosen raw processor and applying the value you get to all the other images that were taken on the same shoot in the same light. If the light changes you quickly take another shot. I keep mine in my left back pocket from where I can quickly grab it and hold it at arms length to take a reference shot, all in a matter of 2-3 seconds. The card itself is hard wearing, easy to clean and can even be used underwater (for anyone doing underwater photography!) There are other cards which work just as well such as the Dynatech and the Digital Gray Card
JMcLParticipantMy DIY solution involves cutting 2 largish rectangles out of the sides of a 2L milk carton, taping them together (to make them more opaque). Then with the lens on manual focus, tab a shot with the yokie held up to the lens, pointing in the direction I’m taking the shot, and use that for custom WB. I couldn’t say it’s 100% accurate, but it’s not at all bad, and can’t argue with the price ;). I couldn’t bring myself to buy a WhiBal as I found Michael Tapes enormously irritating during his entire dictatorship on the RawShooter forums.
