Hi lads, read that all digital cameras entering Ireland by post are duty free.I’m about to import one from States shortly and would like to hear experiences of those who did import digital cameras already. Is that statement true or just about rumors???

    Hi localchap.

I’m afraid it’s all rumour. Duty is charged at 6.7% and then VAT at 21%. Depending on where you buy though
you can still make a substantial saving. I managed to save just over ?200 on a lens posted to me from
    B&H Photo in New York.

Rob: tha point is, like they say, only digital cameras are duty free!when it comes to lenses, other photo gear no exemptions!Could you share with your experince , how did you manage to save your $$$ on lens posted from B&H? did you ask them not to declare real value or something???

VAT and Import Duty are often confused. Digital Camera bodies are exempt from duty but not from VAT. At least that was the situation some 3? years ago when I imported a 10D body from B&H and I don’t think the situation has changed since then. You can check the tariff codes on the Revenue’s website to get a definitive answer, although you’ll have to do a bit of digging – http://www.revenue.ie

And I just heard on the news yesterday that the Revenue are being especially vigilant on imports, so little chance of not getting a bill payable to the postie I’m afraid.

They always are at this time of year, given the season that’s in it and so many people making shopping weekend trips to NY.

Digital camers are 0% rated for duty but VAT is calculated at 21% on the cost of the camera and transport to Ireland.

You can use the eu taric for duty rates as it’s kept more up to date than the Irish version. The customs code for digital cameras is 8525401100.

Ah, I didn’t realise that bodies were exempt from duty, learn something new every day. My own experience? All above board, full value declared, but the lens was just so much cheaper from B&H than anywhere in Europe, so even with VAT and duty added on I saved a fortune, simple as that.
