Digital Slide for Competitions?
-
figParticipant
Just reading this post here https://www.photographyireland.net/viewtopic.php?t=23188 and followed the link to http://www.digitalslides.co.uk/ where it mentions that it can make slides for among other things “national and international camera club competitions” Is it acceptable to create a slide from a digital file for use in competition? I know the IPF seem to be leaning towards projected image either digital or slide.
As a digital photographer myself who believes you should do whatever you can to make the the photo work, I kinda don’t like the idea of digital bullying it’s way into the world of slide. I have a great respect for people working with slide and I have it on my todo list to start taking slide again for our club competitions. Am I wrong thinking this? Will a judge spot a digital slide a mile away?

Not Pete the blokeParticipantSlides made from digital files are more common than you might think, and they are certainly accepted as a ‘slide’ entry in the NIPA (NI Photographic Association) inter club competitions. The likelihood is that in the next year or two, ‘slides’ will disappear in favour of the ‘projected image’ format. It will be a pity to see the true slide genre disappear, but on the camera club scene, there are very few photographers using slide film.
As to telling the difference, if it is a good quality digital photo in the first place, it will probably take a trained eye to spot the difference. But even if a judge does regard it as a digital file, it is not breaking the rules of the competition and should be marked accordingly ie on its merits.ThorstenMemberMy perspective on it, for what it’s worth, is that a slide is simply the medium on which the image is carried and in that respect it’s no different to a CD, a print or a negative. Each will of course have their own characteristics which will affect the image to a greater or lesser degree and this is usually the reason why one is chosen in preference to another. But I wouldn’t get too hung up about a digitaly captured image being written to transparency film using a slide writer. In principle, it’s no different to printing an image using an inkjet printer, for example.
