First off it’s available at: http://www.gpsoft.com.au/ and there is a support forum here: http://resource.dopus.com/.
Ciaran mentioned on another thread that he uninstalled DOpus after 20 minutes. Unfortunately that is not an uncommon reaction. I did it myself the first time. Though the programme initially seems massive and a little daunting it is not really. Once you have it set up to your liking it is a fantastic way of working.
Let me say firstly that I am not into the cosmetics of an operating system. The first thing I do after a windows install or reinstall is to turn off all the fancy stuff. This gets the machine working as fast as possible. What DOpus does is to facilitate whatever you do. After setting it up to your way of working it is very difficult to go back. At least that is my experience. The programme is as powerful or as simple as the user wants it to be. Being a rather simple person I have not explored its depths but have made a few basic settings.
When my PC comes on preset window opens. That window has only icons for stuff that I use regularly. If I need to open another window I just double click anywhere on the screen that I want it to appear. Navigation is really easy and is determined by the menu items that the user has set at the top of the window. Not being particularly technically minded I can’t vouch for this but I am told that it is better at multitasking than the windows kernel.
There are tutorials, both visual and written, screen shots etc at the resource address above.
From a photographers perspective I love the way it gives a thumbnail by just hovering the mouse over a file. It can also be set to give EXIF info and of course, as mentioned, it can give detailed information on folder content and sizes.
This is only the tip of the iceberg and someone a bit more interested or savy with PC’s will get even more than I do from it.
Oh and it’s biggest plus for me is its Amiga legacy. Boy was the Amiga a lost opportunity
ThorstenMemberAnybody remember XTree Gold in the good old days of DOS? To borrow a quote from “Jack Dundee” in Crocodile Dundee – …that (DOS) ain’t a file manager, THAT’s (XTree) a file manager! It was an exceptionally powerful and versatile file and disk manager. Even now, in the days of Windows everything, there’s a fansite dedicated to it. Incidentally, the author of XTree is also an avid photographer – http://www.jeffreycjohnson.com/

There’s also a good user guide, with pics and anims of many of DOpus’ features, here: http://www.pretentiousname.com/opus/bf1.html#big
As Valentia said, there’s a lot of stuff contained in this software, so much so that it can be daunting to first-time users. Stick with it though, get to know some of its more powerful features and you’ll never want to go back to Windows Explorer (or just Windows in general!)
I may post a short guide here later on, to demonstrate some of DOpus’ photography workflow-related features. Let me see what I can come up with.
Take it easy folks,

Directory Opus – Hidden Tile Game in Directory Opus for Windows
You need Directory Opus 6 for Windows to see this egg (http://www.gpsoft.com.au)
1. Make sure, in the Preferences, that you have the ‘Progress bar speed timer’ option turned on for copying files
2. Start a copy operation for a large file, one that will take a minute or so to complete (say from an ftp site)
3. When the progress dialog box opens, the icon for the file being copied is displayed in the top left corner of the dialog box
4. Hold down the CONTROL key and double-click on the icon
If you do this you will see the progress dialog enlarge to reveal a hidden ’tile’ game at the bottom (slide the tiles around to put them in order)joolsveerParticipantI am still on my free trial and I find the program very good. I like the ftp module best at the moment.
elludeParticipantTry xplorer2 – small and fast dual-pane file manager. Even the free version kicks everything else into touch. http://www.zabkat.com/
The author is a very friendly guy called Nikos Bozinis, and he’s always willing to respond to emailed suggestions for improvements.
PowerDesk used to be my favourite, and I still use it for certain things, but if you like speed and a light user of your computer’s resources then Xplorer2 is THE file manager!
(Thorsten – I used to have XTree Gold too, lol)
