Disposing of Used Fixer
-
hughParticipant
I’m sure this has probably been discussed before but I seem to get conflicting stories about it. What do you guys do with used fixer? By that I mean, those of you who bring it somewhere to get rid of it, rather than poring it down the drain. Do recycle centres around Dublin accept this stuff?
MarkKeymasterHugh,
I believe that its ok to put down the drain. Thats what I seem to recall last time it was asked here.
Someone did a formal check on it…Open to correction of course.
Dermot1ParticipantI think as Mark says you can pour it down the drain, but there’s a really good recycling centre near where I live and they do a hazmat collection once a month for the last few months so i bring mine there. Might be worth checking if there’s a centre near you.
Jonnyp16vParticipantWhere Is that recyling centre Dermot? I’m setting up my own darkroom, would be handy to know.
Dermot1ParticipantJonnyp16vParticipantaoluainParticipanti bring mine to the local lab – they have a machine that extracts the silver before disposal.
hughParticipantAoluain – tell me more about this lab would you?
I’m not seeing anything on the websites of the local recycling centres about this and while I know I could probably pour the stuff down the drain, there must be a better way …
Dermot1Participanthugh if it’s any help, the recycling centre I use didn’t have it advertised I just went and asked the guys there and they gave me a list of dates they’d take it from me. my other half works in a lab I’ll get her to ask her boss if they’ll take it, he has 3 shops in the dublin area.
Dermot1Participantupdate – the other half asked her boss and he said they did in the past but don’t have any policy at the moment, might be worth going to your local lab and asking them, they might not take it but tell you someone who will.
hughParticipantI was down in Ringsend recycling place the other day and asked them. They said no. Suggested trying one of the private waste disposal/recycling companies …
bigalguitarpickerParticipantSouthern Regional College investigated disposal of photographic chemicals and discovered that no regulations exist, and therefore no hazard exists, so throw it down the sink folks.
hughParticipantI’m not sure that just because there are no regulations that it then follows that there is no hazard. Though it certainly might explain why there does not seem to be any facilities for taking it off your hands.
I’ve been throwing it down the sink for ages now. I’m hoping there is a better option …

The potential problem of dumping used fixer is due to the silver in it. If you do a search on methods of silver recovery from fixer, you’ll find some suggestions.
