I have been asked to take a few shots of a shop window. The purpose of the shots are to show the actual items on display, dressed mannequins. Would i need to use a filter for these type of shots. At present i don’t have any filters so should i be using one all the time in general for my only lens at the moment.
Hi Iris. Window displays can be tricky subjects because of the reflections from the glass. A polarising filter will help to reduce the reflections, but won’t work if you are facing the window directly from the front. An angle of about 45 degrees to the glass with a polariser should eliminate most of the reflections. Taking photos of window displays at night can also work well, if there are not lights which will relect in the glass from outside.
As has been pointed out, a polariser can help cut down on reflections, but it’s not necessary. Watching the angle of light v.s where you shoot from can help reduce or even eliminate reflections completely. So in short you don’t NEED a filter.
If the subject is suitable and the lacation safe I would suggest you also do some nightime photograps as well, you might get some unusual results depending on the lighting.
