Do you need permission from the Missus…

I’m a peaceful, caring, loving diplomat… always interested in hearing other people’s views and appreciating them and respecting them whenever possible.

C-2-D Cathal Donnelly is the man you all seek if you want a heated provocative debate (also a 5 Pier, PS Challenge Winner and Landscaper Extraordinaire).

I’m officially a lover and not a fighter… plus I don’t have internet access at home anymore for keeping on top of such debates.

Similarly, I always changed nappies, cooked dinners, got up in the night with the kids, went to Tesco,
etc. And even though I’ve never asked her to, she’s always washed and ironed the clothes – she says
she can’t wait till I think they _need_ washing!

Have to agree there Pete, though I’d have to add the hoovering. My other half is capable of seeing great mounds of dust that are completely invisible to me!

Yep. There wouldn’t be a lot of hoovering done here if it was my job.
I do most washing up though – I’m anti-dishwasher (i.e. the electric sort).

I just don’t get them… it takes a few mins to fill the sink and manually wash… them dishwashers, you have to wait all day before they’re full (which means that dirty delf are sitting there with stains drying out & turning hard), buy special detergents n salt, clean off the heavy stuff manually before they go in, use a ton of electricity… then you take the stuff out and it’s still dirty.

I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about dishwashers-
    and there is a solution.

    You need two of them.

    When you need something clean,
you go to the one that’s been washed most recently.
You use it, then put it in the other dishwasher.

I’m surprised more people don’t do it-
saves that whole ’emptying the dishwasher’ thing,
which is such a chore, and is the antitheses of ‘labour saving’

I’m sure there are many relationships that could be saved with this simple approach-
    if you ask me-

    Oh hang on-
    nobody did…

    There’s getting off-topic and there’s getting off-topic.

JB’s solution seems perfect (ish) and NFL’s analysis of the problem
is almost exactly the same as my own.

What amazes me most is people lecture you about the environment while they fill
    their appliance from hell.

Yeah, I got myself one of them dish washer things. Noisy as feck, wait all day for the stuff to be washed, destroyed the kitchen a few times, cost me a fortune to maintain, never gets a proper job done, and doesn’t really suit the kitchen. So, I got me an electric one and the older dish washer is now quite happy watching TV while the new one does all of the above for her! And the best bit was I didn’t need permission to get it…I was ordered to.

Environmentally, it’s not as clear cut as you might think.

Disherwashers use less hot water and less detergent than handwashing, assuming it is only used when full.

I agree with the hastle thing. I’d rather just wash them, dry them and stack them, job done.

But it’s not for environmental reasons. The worst thing is actually to buy a dishwasher and never use it. The environmental cost associated with its manufacture and transport can be very bad. Once you start to use it you are actually starting to pay back environementally compared to hand washing.
