Dodgy Giant’s Causeway shot
-
AndyLParticipant
Can anyone point me towards some really good shots of the Causeway? I just couldn’t get a composition that I liked, not helped by visiting on a Saturday and running into a surprising number of tourists!
C&C as always appreciated!
G-KennyParticipanti quite like it, I do agree with it lacking in a bit composition but generally i think its not a bad image, have been up there myself but cant remember any good place apart from the usual “tourist” places
thefizzParticipantCroping up to under the rocks which are in the water makes a nice panoramic.
PeteWMemberI think there’s a couple of cropping opportunities here.
The first, and my personal choice, would be to crop out the top from just below the horizon, and take out the right side from the middle rocks.
Second choice would depend on the size of the original but there might be something you could do with the top right section.
As it stands though, it’s not that bad, possibly some more colour in the sky might be good, but other than that, we’d be just messing about for messing abouts sake.

guthrijParticipantI rather like this. i couldn’t resist playing with it in PS. Hope you don’t mind. I tried to bring out some colour in the sky and boost the contrast. I fear I might have over cooked it.
Cheers, John
MadeleineCalaidoWeberParticipantI don’t think that it is a matter of contrast. Both are fine but they create a totally different time of light….morning and sunset.
The base of that image is very beautiful but there is too much going on.a all the details in the stones and the water and the sky….I would suggest:
1. The sky is “dirty” and no true colour light. brighten it up a little bit
2. sharp the image. The hdr created washed out forms. It is an art to “save” the sharpness of an hdr image. Use the unsharp masking.
3. The centred stones…the water doesn’t create this white lines…it is an hdr accident which is the nature of water hdr. i would soft it a little bit.You have beautiful golden light from the right. I would highlight this to create “contrast” insteed of darkening everything.
All together a wonderful image which needs a little bit more attention in the processing. That’s all. Just my opinion(:
cathaldParticipantAndy i found the causeway a very hard place to shoot the main reason being the tourists
if you go past the main attraction there is a pathway that takes you around the cliffs with stunning views
there is much more to the causeway than just the causeway, the other way would be to turn left when you
come out of the visitor centre and there is a cliff top walk, you can get down to the shoreline in a few places
the great cave of dunkerry is around there and you might see Andy floating around in his dingy……..
I have been meaning to get to a few of these places in the evening for sunset shots…if we get any sun.Cathal
Harry LimeParticipantI wouldn’t be getting disillusioned Andy! I think it’s a corker.
Having said that I’d probably be tempted to sharpen, up contrast and desaturate a little. Might be worth a try?
mcmartinParticipantAndy, no intention to brag here, maybe these would help you to compose something, I live not to far from Giant Causeway, at least for now, and been there many times…
i love this place and I’m sure I’ll revisit some time in the future…
these are one of the first I ever took, and took them long time ago… ( relatively speaking)Second one is the place Cathal mentioned, It isn’t accessible from neither lower or upper cliff paths, Andy McInroy took me there, what became one of the most interesting photo sessions I’ve been to…
So good luck and hope these help…rc53Membercathald wrote:

I’d agree about the tourists, and the National Trust has covered the place with life belts.
From what I’ve seen, sunset seems a good time.
