Dogs and children..

Paula N PhotographyParticipant
I’m just doing portraits since October (only the odd one here and there). My children are mostly the guinea pigs. Tried yesterday with my 11 month old baby and dog. Please click on the 3 links to see pics. Not sure how to paste them into the message.
Critique please would be great. :)RASMITH32MemberHi Paula, These are well taken shots. WHilst new to portraits you are obviously not new to a camera and lighting. The Third is the best IMO , you captured the moment well. the second could have done with a reflector just to lift the light on the babies face a little.
Apart from that the only thing I would question re the compositions is the use of a dog with such a young baby. Those sort of statements generally kick off heated discussion on dogs, but for me a composition that has a beautiful baby so young and a dog simply doesnt work, they dont compliment each other in the overall feel to the shot. The dog towers over the baby and makes the baby feel subordinate leaving the viewer wondering who the baby actually is, the baby, or the dog.
Disregarding my feelings on dogs, Really great shots and well taken / lit. Interested to see some of your other stuff too.
Paula N PhotographyParticipantHi Ras,
Thank you very much for the feedback. I am actually new to the whole lighting and studio lights etc but at the photography a few years.Do you really think the dog towers over the baby in the pic? The dog is our much loved family pet so I suppose you could say he is definitely one of the family and the children love him. I didn’t think about the heated discussion you mentioned so it is good to keep that in mind. Thanks for that.
Anyone else agree with Ras’s views on photographing kids with dogs? Is it something I shouldn’t advertise?IsabellaParticipanti personally dont have any problem with the presence of the dog, or any issue with babies and dogs being in the same space. it would never occur to me either that people might have issue, both look clean, healthy and happy.
perhaps people who either dont like dogs or are afraid of them?
id say that 2 is probably the most effective composition as there is a bit of interaction between the two and showing clearly the relationship between them. agree with ras re reflector in that one though.
i guess 1 and 3 child and dog could in theory be photoshopped together as they have no interaction, there is no relationship established and it could be any dog with any child rather than being obviously well acquainted friends.
MartinParticipant3 lovely pictures. I like the colour in the first. All in all a nice set of pictures i think, very hard to pic a favourite
I would have no problem with “the use of a dog with such a young baby” if it was a pitbull or something maybe but not this type of dog…
