DSLR User – slow to pay up…

Anybody had any dealings with this magazine?

I wrote a ‘Reader Review’ for them on the D80, and it was published in the December 2007 issue.

They were supposed to send me a 4GB memory card. It hasn’t arrived. I’ve been onto them a few times, through email, and every time they ask what is my address and would I like an SD card or a CF card. This has been going on some time now.

Do you think they’re waiting until the price of a 4GB card drops below 50 cents?!

I’ve done a bit of writing for various magazines and newspapers. My advice is: don’t do it for the money.
They mostly seem to think you’ll be happy to see your name in print, and that payment is secondary.
One newspaper laughed at me when I was chasing up a payment – the woman actually said, “I thought
you did for fun”. And that was after we’d agreed a fee in advance.

I do write, but never charge, because I DO love the art of photography.

I also used to be a journalist and strangely enough, in my experience, national newspapers are quick to pay, and magazines who have commissioned an article are also fairly speedy, (you just had to wait a few months for the article to be in print!). But all of the local papers were slow, except one. And they were probably only quick to pay because they trained me. On the whole the local papers seemed to think that seeing your name in print was payment enough.

However this piece wasn’t for money. In their words: ‘Pete Smith wins himself a 4GB SanDisk card for this month’s report’. I naively thought they would have a draw full of memory cards ready to be sent out.

Now I’m wondering if it dropped through Pete The Bloke’s letterbox…
