Dublin Airport lit for St. Patricks Day

    Greetings all,

I originally went to this location on 17th March, St. Patrick’s day to capture this pano. When I came home to assemble it I wasn’t happy with my shots. So I returned on the 18th March. Thankfully the building was still illuminated.

I have submitted this image to the Panobook 2013 competition by kolor.com. Last year I had two Panoramics selected for printing in Panobook 2012. Fingers crossed!!

    Enjoy…

    Hi Niall,
    no replies so far ?

I really like this as a balance of the old and the new in Dublin airport with so many changes since the original art deco building was constructed.

Love the symmetry. Green is quite strong on the building but as you say it was to celebrate St Patricks Day.

Maybe a B/W or sepia version for comparison?? Well done. Heard you had great company on the night !

Best of luck with the book. Like Beeker I can’t understand why there aren’t more replies. It’s an unusual shot of an unusual subject. Green lighting always seems to come out very strong. I’ve noticed this in a few photos of my own and had to tone it down quite a bit. Probably would have gone a bit earlier myself and tried to get some light in the sky.

Give it more time, not everyone on this forum visit all the topics every day, not to mention more than once a day. Also, I think that people aren’t just lazy or don’t know technical details to post and critique, it’s rather that they are not interested in certain types of shots. People tend to comment the type of photography that they like to take the most themselves. Isn’t it?

I’m not mad into taking pictures of buildings myself but will say my two pennies worth.. Being quite the often visitor of the airport, I never really saw it that way, so well done, you’ve made it look a bit more appealing to me already, haha. The arch is great and I like the lights, the green might be a bit bright but that probably depends what screen you look at it. Not too sure that the fully dark sky suits the best,as well. But well done, a very strong composition. And good luck with it at the competition! :)

    Vee,

Thanks for taking the time to write at such length. Just about to post another pano of the airport, this time taken just under the arch. Hope you like it.

    And thanks again.

I like the composition & symmetry of this, but I also think that it might have worked better (for me anyway) if it had been taken a bit earlier. The sky would have had a hint of blue before it turned totally dark & I think that this would have complimented the green on the terminal & the grass and would have helped cut down the light polution colour (orange) in the sky coming from the tungsten light.
I am not familiar with the layout around where you were shooting from, but I would have possibly tried to move back further from the arch (which is cropped at the top BTW), and used a longer lens which would compress the image & bring the terminal building more to the fore while still keeping the arch as it’s frame. I would have also liked to have seen a small bit of human activity in the shot to bring it to life, but not too much as to distract from the main subject.
I don’t shoot panos, but I realise how difficult it is to get it all to stitch together & you seem to have mastered it. Keep up the good work.

ps The green on the terminal building is a bit bright for me also. Good luck.

    Miki G,

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I didn’t notice the arch being cropped. Where did you see that?

With regard to the green, I use color calibration no my monitor using the X-Rite i1 Display and have color profiles setup on my camera within Lightroom, using an X-Rite ColorChecker Passport. The greens, of which there were two levels of brightness, are a good rendition of the scene. They were a little gaudy OK, but hey I didn’t pick them!!

When shooting pano, I use all manual settings, including ISO and Color Temperature within the camera, to stop the camera for adjusting itself in any way.

    Thanks again Miki G

Ooops. The arch is not cropped, but my screen was showing it as cropped for some reason yesterday. Sorry about that.
As for the green, I’m not suggesting that “you got it wrong”, but rather that it’s not exactly the most beautiful shade of green to have to work with.

Good, good, no problem at all Miki, I know the green wasn’t the nicest shade that was what I was implying by saying ‘I didn’t pick it’. It eas definitely tooooo bright!!

Anyways, have a good weekend, look forward to see what you post next week.
