A quick trip to the Zoo yesterday thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. It was drizzling most of the day, but at least it wasn’t lashing like today! Apologies for posting too many photos!

I have a few more that I want to share here, will post them in a while. Overall, I am really impressed by the atmosphere, I am now thinking of taking a membership there!!

To borrow ‘beef’s expression, this thread probably is going to “go down like lead”, but here goes rest of the photos.

    Here’s someone sussing me out!

Some very nice shots there, nice and sharp and well exposed.
I particularly like the heron and the second Orangutan, though it
seems you may be a little heavy-handed when it comes to
saturation in your post-processing, particularly noticeable in the
    greenery…

Those Heron sure make for great models :)

The Tiger … colours are off. Plus it needs to be portrait aspect rather than landscape. It’s a vertical subject so turn that camera around :)

I like the first Orang. I can see why the mother/baby is your fave. I waited by them for ages on Friday and she just would not wake up. The sun was too harsh by 10AM too to get eye detail so I gave up.

The peacocka nd goose protraits … the eyes are too dark. And I’m back to that portrait persepective again for vertical subjects. Landscape works for the Heron because it’s up close and there’s that long bill.

Thanks Sancho, I think that’s Lioni, a girl, and the real mother of the the little baby Orangutan, Riona. She flashed everyone a few times before she went up that perch, and she was showing off for a while before she made that face and climbed down from there. I think you are right about her expression though! :D

Rob, thank you! You just confirmed what I was worried about all along. The photos out of camera looks very dull, and I always tweak it in Lightroom by increasing the contrast, a bit of saturation, vibrance and in those Orangutan pictures in particular, the colors got that bad when I did a bit of ‘black clipping’ (what ever that is, it says so in the history). I am not really sure where I should stop when it comes to tweaking!! I will try not to touch the saturation from now on and see if I can fix the ‘flatness’ with other controls.

Aidan, thank you! Thanks for the comments on the orientation, I agree, I think I should have done better. I am not complaining but, the tiger was actually too close (!!) for the Sigma 70-300 lens to allow me a bit of room around him(?). He was in a cuddly/purrr mood and kept walking along the glass barrier! Have to say thats the closest I have ever been to a tiger (though I have touched ones tail before…) and its a bit worrying to be honest! You are right about the peacock’s eyes too – I figured out I can bring out a bit more detail by increasing a the light/brightness and the recovery slider!

Thanks again all, exactly the kind of criticism that I am looking for!

Excellent Positron :) Looks like you had a very productive day. Absolutely love the composition in the first shot. The second shot is superb – I tried this the last time i was there but the little fecker turned his back on me, by the time he did a full 360 the feathers were down :D I think the colour balance on the tiger shot looks a bit off (slightly blue?).

Love the expressions in the second set. Have to agree with Rob, the second Orangutan is fab :)

Great selection of shots, some a bit over processed but most are excellent…love the Orangs

Thanks Ali. Well, shooting that peacock was really easy because he was showing off for hours! In fact by the time I noticed him the camera had ran out of battery (left the spares in the car, how clever!!). I went out of the zoo, got spare batteries, and when I got back, he was still at it, totally enjoying the attention! Yeah, the tiger, I think I will go back to the original and leave the colors alone!

    Thanks Noely!

Great close ups. Lovely colours on the peacock.
The second Orangutan shot would be my favourite.

    RavenAsh, cheers!

Beth, thank you, I will be more careful with Lightroom sliders in future – its soo easy to get carried away! It was a Sigma 70-300 F4/5.6 APO DG Macro (phew..!), except for the first peacock shot – that was with the 50mm 1.8

Sharon, thanks a million, yeah, I think its Lioni, the real mother of the little orangutan, Riona. Here’s their story.

Really enjoyable set of shots…I especially like the Orangutan shots, you caught some lovely expressions. Not gonna talk about any technical framing/colour balance issues cos I’ve done them all myself ..I’ll leave that to more experienced shooters

To my mind…the first and most important thing is to get the shot..and I reckon you’ve done that very well. The other stuff can be learned with experience and even fiddled with in PS :D

Well said Robbie I think the hard work has been done here and always time to make adjustments later “No picture no adjustment”
