Just wondering, if you guys edit your photos?
They’re fairly impressive just glancing through the gallery.
I take loads of photo’s but to be honest, my favourite ones or the ones people seem to like are my most edited ones…
Editing good? or bad?shutterbugParticipantWell it is my opinion that some editing is unavoidable, crucial even if shooting
RAW the same as film photographers “develop” in the darkroom, then digital
photographers “edit” on the computer. There are of course many levels to the
editing process and I try to get the best possible shot from the camera as regards
lighting, composition leaving as little as possible post processing on the computer.I also enjoy playing around with photoshop creating “digital art” manipulating
photographs though I am not particularly good at it.MartinOCParticipantIf you don’t do some editing you may sell your photos short.
I’m dabbling in film now and I’m trying out different types of film to see which suits me best.
Film types have different characteristics in colour saturation, contrast etc.
I have seen photo exhibitions recently from Michael Kenna and Mario Giacomelli, both at masters of the darkroom as well as knowing where to point the camera. I have no bias against post-processing.
However in the main I think less is more, or at least the post-processing shouldn’t be obvious.I’ve only used cloning in 2 photos (to remove tourists), perhaps cheating a bit, but adjusting colours and contrast is always fair game in my opinion.
What comes from the camera probably isn’t what you see, even if you wish to be very “faithful”.I would usually look adjusting the contrast or occasionally colour correction and usually sharpening; the shadow and highlight tool can be handy.
But every photo needn’t be a photoshop challenge.
With digital you can develop a workflow that suits your ideas/photos best.Martin
