I was asked by a friend to go to his band’s gig in An Cruiscín Lán today, he is a member on the forum as well.

Its the first time I have taken photos at a gig so please give some honest comments. I have left the photos basically as shot from the camera.

Really good for your first attempt… I’m about to fall asleep on the keyboard so will give some better feedback tomorrow.

1 and 4 are my faves, brilliant work to get photo’s like that from that sort of lighting!
COmposition and DOF are spot-on too.
For a first time thats brilliant!

Thanks for the comments. The light was very hard to deal with, a bit change from what I’m used to when dealing with Motorsports, but at least I had fast glass. They were taken with a 50mm f1.8. But I took a few more with a 10-22mm, but have a bit more noise.

That’s a very good set in my opinion given that venue, well done – as already commented, composition and DOF are excellent, and coping in those conditions isn’t easy at all. I’ve shot in that venue a few times and know exactly how crap both the lighting and the space for shooting are. The last gig I resorted to flash as otherwise the pics would have been just too poor.

The light was difficult enough, but I was able to use ISO 1250, which gave me respectable enough shutter speeds at f1.8.

I thought it was good to try to take something else other than cars, so was happy enough with the photos, but there are plenty that need deleting, the ratio of good to bad is terrible for my shots away.

They look very noise free for ISO 1250… out of the camera, these are brilliant. No. 3 and 6 are the best in my opinion, although the framing is a bit off on both… you tend to aim high. This happens to me all the time, when I am using the centre AF point and recomposing.

    Nice work.

Thanks for the comments. I just had a quick look at the EXIF and yeah they are ISO 1250. I was using a 1D Mk2 for them. I just got the camera at the weekend so the gig was a bit of a test for it. The weight and the high quailty high ISO quaility are the main differences between it and my 30D. Totally amazed with the ISO capability, but I found nearly the same when I switched to the 30D from a Nikon D50 last year.

I can see what you mean about photos 3 and 6, I was moving the autofocus points around a lot, and there is a lot of them. And I guess from taking motorsport photos I m more inclined to try to centre the main focus of the photo in the frame.

The setting for the first one are as follows

    Camera in Av

    Exposure: 0.01 sec (1/100)
    Aperture: f/1.8
    Focal Length: 50 mm
    ISO Speed: 1250
    Exposure Bias: -1 EV
    Flash: Flash did not fire

My flickr account http://www.flickr.com/photos/ontherack/ has the rest of the photos and the settings used

    DJ,
    Photos are grand.
Keith Cooper from prodig.org newsletter did a bunch of tests and found that interval ISO’s like 1250 have the same noise as the next highest Stop ISO. So 1250 is as noisy as 1600, 500 as noisy as 800, so if you have to go to 1250, you may as well reap the shutter speed benefit from 1600 for the same noise.

Personally I love shooting gigs, it’s well easy to get addicted.

great shots and gear. I’ve done some shots like these and the lighting is really difficult.(Love to be able to get that quality at the high ISO) you’ve done a great job IMHO :)
