Engagement session

These are from an engagement session over the weekend, brrrr. We spent a couple of hours around Devils Glen in Ashford.

Appreciate any and all critiques. They all have something I’d like to change just wonder if anyone else picks up on them or maybe something I’ve overlooked.

    thanks

Never usually comment on these cause I’m very much a beginner, but really like 3, 2 and 6. I guess 6 though for the sleeve notes if they make an album, very atmospheric, but 2 and 3 are more your usual portrait type shots. On looking again, quite like the lighting in 4. Great shots, I’d be over the moon if they were mine.

I never comment in this section as I don’t really do people photography apart from your normal candid but I will have a go. Number two and three are great portrait shots and I really like the sunlight in number six. As for negatives, I would clone out the label on the coat in the first one.

    thanks for the comments

I like to do a variety of styles on these days. I usually try and get the more standard couple type shots done first then move onto differnt types of setups.

I agree that the last one probably wouldnt be the one I’d recomend as the portrait from this session, but I’d bet it’s the one they get most excited about. I feel Her hand is a touch awkward in that one. I wish I’d asked her to keep it in her pocket like her other hand.

Well spoted on the jacket label Seaview, I’ll take your advice on that.

    thanks again for looking

A great set of shots and as the others said..I’ll bet they’ll be delighted with them.

As for picky stuff…the biggest thing that stands out to me is the way he is holding her hand in No.1. It doesn’t look relaxed to me..almost like he’s squashing her hand..awkward looking. Was this taken earlier in the session maybe? As already mentioned ..the lady’s right hand in the second last shot looks intrusive.

As for favourites, I really like the last shot…and the mono shot.

    Hope this helps.

I see what you mean on the first one, and you’re right it’s one from the begining. I may have another in the same pose where their hands are a touch looser. Thanks for the observation.

This was my first portait session for awhile and I was a bit out of practice on my posing direction. One thing that stands out on most of them is how I missed how straint her head is. Looking at the slight angle in the last one compared to the others shows how a little tilt can make a big difference.

    thanks for taking the time

I would pick the second, third and the last one. Brilliant light on the second, isolating their faces with the foreground blur is a nice touch. Their expressions and the glare on the last one is spot on, even if the faces and her hand are a bit underexposed/shaded. They must have loved these photos.

Very nice set, I think the mono is the pick, but I really liked the last one as well, hadn’t noticed her hand until Iread you comment.

Great light in them all, did you use flash at all?

    hi Sinead

    thanks for the comments.

with the exception of the last one I used 1 off camera flash, shot through an umbrella. In the second one a reflector was used to bounce some of the flash back into their faces. In the last one I stood a reflector against a tree just beside me.

    thanks again

Thanks for sharing that information.. Off camera flash, do you just use a flash gun for that?
Sorry for questions.. Thinking I might invest in a flash of some sort.

    no worries at all.

yep, it’s just a flash gun pointed through a 80cm white umbrella on a lightstand. I used an Nikon SB800 wirelessly controlled by a SU800 on my camera. I have to say for such a simple set up it adds a great deal.

Number four for me, though without the sunglasses it might have
been number three. I do like your processing though, great colours…

thanks Rob….no.4? that interesting. I’m glad, I thought I may have been off on my judgment of that one.
