Can I ask what length lens you were using?
I have always fancied a bit of street photography and even thought of going to the English Market before but have always chickened it
stasberMemberI used a 50mm, though on a 35mm camera this is a normal lens so if you’re going to use digital, it would equate to using a 30mm lens.
50mm (or 30mm on digital) would require you to be in reasonable proximity to people, which takes some getting used to. I hope to take some more next weekend to get used to overcoming this psychological barrier.

i read somewhere that yer man henri cartier bresson used to pre-focus at around 8/10ft, select an f8 aperture and walk around with his camera inside his coat only to reveal it  when he saw something interesting
hope to try it myself soon and head to the cattle marts !
AliParticipantVery nice Stas, which reminds me i must get off my arse and take my film camera out and about. Damn you :). Really like the first, very well captured and the expressions just make it for me. *sings* More more more…

Better be careful there Thomas…might get done for indecent exposure…
stasberMemberNice discussion lads, cheers.

Did you get the film processed in Cork ?
All in Spectra on Pana; the film is in regular stock and they’ll develop & scan it to CD for about 10 yoyo (don’t remember exact cost) for the 1 hour service. Physical scanned neg dims are 2100×1400 pix, good for up to 5×7 I’m told – for preview, web use or general day to day, this is grand.

Likely using hyperfocal theory where for a given aperture a particular zone will be acceptably sharp, so in theory if you pre-set the focus anything in that zone will be (acceptably) sharp in your picture. There’s been some lively and technical debate about that here, some for it and some countering it (it’s a theory afterall). I’ve not tried it myself (but thanks for reminding me , I’ll give it a shot – or 36 :) ) so won’t go on, though apparently focusing approx 1/3 into your scene will give most consistent results – and that’s what I’m gonna try. Suck it & see is my personal view, but looking at some of his (HCB) work, I doubt you could do everything in time for some of those great street candids – aperture, shutter speed, compose, focus, recompose and leave the lens cap on etc.. :D

Thanks Ali. I recommend it highly – I miss film now and getting back into it is great, you gotta slow a whole lot down and get to enjoy the process. Can’t be as carefree as with digital. I rattled off some 200 frames in a shoot for a dance company on Sunday. We reduced that to 30 keepers or ‘maybe’ shots. The same shoot using film??? Thank crunchie for digital

…I suppose it depends on how decent the kit is
peter1892MemberGreat shots – they definitely give a good sense of the atmosphere of the market.
stasberMemberHi there Peter, thank you. That’s what I was intending and glad it comes across.
