Enthusiastic beginner on photo mags?
-
ExpresbroParticipant
I did the whole magazine thing for my first year after buying the D80 and now have several issues of varying mags for a whole calender year, so I find now that I rarely buy a new mag anymore..just recycle the ones I have this year…you’ll find the same articles tend to crop up seasonally…how to get the most from shooting in Winter/Spring/Summer/Autumn etc!!
Just buy the odd one now to read reviews on new equipment and the like, or if I see a particular useful cover mount DVD.
joe_elwayParticipantI’m the same as Robbie. A year of one magzine gives you the tutorials that are repeated every year. And most of the magazines have the same stuff every month. Wait till you see next month – “how to get killer Spring photos of bluebells”. In the summer “how to get photos on sunflowers”. Autumn: “sunsets and red deer”. Winter: “Frosty mornings and snow”.
I’m even skeptical of equipment reviews. One publisher will rave about Nikon only. Another will favour Canon. Just like in IT press, whoever pays for the advertising gets the applause. Who can trust that?
The only time I buy them now is if I’m going somewhere and I’m early and need something to read while I’m waiting.
nfl-fanParticipantAgree with the lads on the above… I bought mags religiously for about a year… and learned a lot from them… now I’ve stopped simply because it all gets a bit repetitive. I revisit the CDs from time to time to refresh myself on how to do certain things.
Handy now only for bus journeys and the like, to kill a couple of hours. They do from time to time give you good ideas in relation to other things such as kit… software… printers etc.
Google… that’s my magazine replacement… you’ll find everything you need on the web.
ThorstenMemberI agree with the general view that magazines recycle their content each year and I’ve buying them for that reason too, except for one which I didn’t mention earlier because it’s not aimed at the beginner and that’s Digital Photo Pro. Because it’s a magazine aimed at the pro market, it doesn’t really have how-to features which are recycled every so often. It does feature interesting interviews and discussions with established pros, covers things like different business and marketing ideas and also seems to have good equipment reviews. It’s the only photographic magazine coming out of the UK and Ireland that I enjoy reading from cover to cover. Other than that, I tend to read magazines online such as US based magazines Rangefinder and Professional Photographer and the occasional German magazine – I think it’s great to get a different, international perspective on the industry and art.
