Erin McKeown in Whelan’s

Unfortunately I was pretty much stuck in one place and all I could do to change the style of shot I was getting was to crouch down a bit when the person in front of me moved. Anyway, it was an amazing gig, though for most of it I was holding a pint between my legs :)

All taken with the 50mm 1.4 on my Canon 400d, I’d say all the settings were the same, ISO800 f2 1/100.

    Nice shots Cian.
Erin is great to work with. I’ve mixed sound for her a number of times, including on this tour..
She’s even used images of mine on her website.
Her tour manager on this tour was an amazing photographer called Desdemona.

Ah yes, Desdemona, I recognise the face. She was standing about 2 meters away from me with her big mad 5D and 70-200L (there was me with my 400D and a 50mm 1.4). Thanks for the link, her stuff is really really good.

Don’t feel so bad, she shares the 5D with her Dad. Her other camera is a 30D though. She also had an 85 f1.2L in the bag..

Ah, I don’t feel bad, I’m just prone to gear envy :-) At the end of the day I was delighted with the shots I got. The only regret I have is that I didn’t have a zoom lens, seeing as I couldn’t move around, a zoom might have given me more variation in my shots.

I love the light in these Cian. Next time I’m at a gig I must bring my 50mm 1.8. Though as you say, the drawback is that you need to be pretty close to the stage and don’t have much choice of angles if you’re stuck in one place.

Speaking of gigs, where are good intimate places for gigs where they allow cameras? I’m assuming Whelan’s hence the above. Or did you need permission to shoot there?

With a 50mm prime and no flash you should get away with it almost anywhere. I went to this gig straight from work and nobody checked my bag so I didn’t ask for permission, to be honest I don’t think I ever would with just the prime, it’s way less obtrusive than the dozens of p&s cmaeras in crowd constantly fireing off flash.

Whelans and I’d say the village are pretty accomodating, I haven’t tried crawdaddy but I’d say that should be ok (I was at the Jenny Lindfors gig a couple of weeks ago and I’d say I could have gotten away with it), this is all assuming a mid-week gig. I’ve shot a number of times at the Ruby sessions on Tuesday nights, always with my 50mm 1.4, but I’ve never had a really good position. I’m planning on going there this week with my fancy new 70-200mm 2.8 so I’ll probably have to ask permission at the door, it being a monstrosity.

I’m hoping to try The Sunday Roast in Thomas Reads and the Zodiac Sessions (open mic) in Bruxelles one of these days soon.

Well I don’t get to gigs very often these days. Mostly Vicar Street as I have bro in law in Ticketmaster who ocasionally gets me freebies for undersold gigs…I think Vicar Street are fairly strict with camera use though.

Last time I was in Whelan’s that I can remember was for Dale Watson..and that was years ago. Always liked i as a venue though. I can’t stand those big stadium places. Seems like a waste of money to me. I like to see the sweat on their faces.. :D

Must try and get around a few of the places you’ve mentioned. Never know…might bump into you there… :D
