i just paid a visit to the warehouseexpress shop in norwich

its huge!!!!!, must of had 30 or 40 canon lenes on display

the bit of kit i bought was 350 stg, which is about 400 euro, and to buy in ireland was 550 ish

but i did happen to be near the warehouseexpress shop.

i would normally buy locally where i can. and not all things are cheaper

a set of lights i was looking at was 789 stg, they are 765 in dml, mind there is VAT ontop of the 765, but still its not far off

No import duty or VAT to pay :D My most recent purchase was my xmas present to myself, the 24-105mm f4 L IS USM lens unboxed (split from a kit, comes in a plain white box with lens hood and soft case) for a total of Stg£637.59 delivery included which comes in well below €700. Same item unboxed as previously mentioned in Conn’s is €999.99 and I believe the same item in the standard Canon box, ie Canon logo and Lens type printed on it is nearly €1200. Saw the same lens in Harvey Normans for €1249.

I am looking to buy a good beginners camera but don’t have a clue really what to buy. I’ve looked at the Canon EOS range and would appreciate advice on it? Is the 50D too advanced for me? I am planning to travel later in the year and want a camera that will stand up to a bit of wear and tear. At the moment with the exchange rate it is 729£?? – http://www.parkcameras.com/9987/Canon-EOS-50D-.html. Thanks for the help and advice.

I have used EOS both film and digital and have a 40D that is a great workhorse. I also have an old and great Nikon manual film camera that is solid and classy.

However, if I were starting out now, I would consider the portability of the Panasonic Lumnix G1 (or maybe the Pentax range).

    Just a thought.

Think I have finally made a decision about the camera type – Canon EOS 450 – like the feel of it after a trip to the shops. However didn’t want to let on that I didn’t have a clue about lens. Which is the better option Canon EOS 450D with EF-S 18-200mm IS Lens Kit or the Canon EOS 450D Digital Camera with 18-55mm IS and 55-250mm IS Double Zoom Kit? Thanks. D

Second one I would think. The IS on Canons is a great feature.
Also expensive to buy those kind of lenses seperately. You’ll get a better deal in the twin lens package

Thanks for the advice – went on a lens comparison site and both the IS lenses had gotten good reviews. So I’ve bit the bullet and ordered the 450D with both lenses. It was good value 608£ for the camera & both lenses and with the exchange rate as good as it is I think I did well. The same model with only 1 of the lenses is 699e on an online Irish site. With a 4G memory card and delivery my bill was 670£. Also from what I’m reading it seems a lot of people use Canon making it easy to share lenses. Now all I need is someone to teach me to use it!! So my new years resolution is to join a camera club. And do a course or 2.

Where are you living? Check out the camera clubs listed on the forum. They generally all come with good reviews.
I’m not a Canon user myself but I have used a 450D once, and I must say it is a nice camera. Seems like you got a good deal with the two lenses!
When I bought mine I went over to New York to get it. The body only for the Nikon D80 over here was €1000 at the time, and I got it over there with a 18-135mm lens, UV filter, two Sandisk memory cards, and a lowepro bag for €750!

I live in Cork and work in another county…………………..Its a commute and a half. I’ve looked at the clubs section and will figure it out! Looking forward to getting my hands on the camera. Spent the afternoon at a 2yrs olds party – some entertaining pics. Looking forward to joining a club and meeting new people. Seems photograpers a friendly crowd and willing to help/answer a question or two.

Watch out for good memory card deals too. I was in London over Xmas and picked up an 8Gb Extreme III card (the newer one with 30mbs transfer rate) for 44 GBP.

What gets me (an aside from photography) is that places like Debenhams have their price tags with sterling and euro – they won’t let you pay the sterling price and even with their 20% sale is more than same sterling price! Rip off personified!! With the ‘normal’ exchange sure grand put both equivalent prices on if you like but when the exchange rate changes, do something to encourage your customers to spend in your shop!

Calumet, online or take a spin up to Boucher Road, Belfast, just off the M1. I think the Nikon D700 is available for about £1550. Bermingham’s in Dublin have reduced it to €2199 but God love them it’s a no brainer with the strength of the Euro. However this will not last forever. There has never been a better time for buying from the UK.

    Cheers, John

I’d highly recommend Calumet in Belfast too. Knowledgeable staff and great prices (atm due to exchange rate). Picked up a D3 and 24-70mm from them for less than €3900.
