Apologies if this has been mentioned elsewhere. I am looking to get an external hard drive to archive photos. Are there any recommendations for brands or sizes? Many thanks.

    Hi

If it was me I would be looking to get an external hard drives with a RAID config. You will pay a little more but your data is
store over two disk so if one disk fails you still got one good disks to get your images/data off. I know I should but I bad at house keep and should copy a lot more of my data to dvd as well as a backup disk. But Im just bad at been a good boy

Any how have a look at some thing like a Western Digital My Book® Mirror Edition™
    or Freecom DataTank 800GB 2 disk, USB-2

Hi. I was talking to a few guys who bought 500gig hard drives in Dunnes of all places and said they were good and only 60 Euro.

I bought both Seagate and Western Digital models from komplett.ie

The thing I liked most about the Seagate was that it came with its own backup s/w which is very easy to use and also seems to be very effecient.

With the WD I have to manually copy the required files over to it and it seems a lot slower.

    PS

When you do get your drive make sure that packing box that you get it in are in very good condition and with a bit of luck it will not have been dropped to much. Also after you power down your disk dont move it to quality to give the disk spin down time. Also best not to keep the drive power up all the time if not in use.

Also I have two disk the same size one I keep with the pc as a working backup the ohter disk that I have good house keeping on with all the data I want to make sure I have. I keep on this disk and I keep this one in work. So I have my data over two sites. So if the house go up in smok I have a backup of some of my data

    There is also online storage

be very very careful with cheap raid drives

I can tell you from experience they dont work as planned

I have a 2TB 4 drive NAS which failed, and the manufacturer could only offer to wipe it and restore to factory state

I paid almost 3000 euros to have all the data recovered from it

This box wasnt even one of the cheaper ones, it cost 1200 euros or so

Try Amazon.co.uk or Komplett.ie for online purchases.

For those considering a RAID drive – it’s not a true backup solution (on its own).
For most people the best and most cost-effective solution is multiple external drives, which are backed up to regularly and held in different locations.

STCSTC – the dodgy NAS device wasn’t a LACIE by any chance ? Mine’s a pile of c**p – slow, lost all its data once, frequently stops working when copying files to it – waste of money.

I have 2 300GB drives in my PC and a matching external HDD. As part of my workflow, after I import my photos into the first internal drive, I run a backup program (Syncback – it’s free) to copy the photos onto the second internal drive and also copy onto the external drive.

This way I have 3 copies of everything, the likelyhood of losing all 3 is highly unlikely. It’s a lot simpler than RAID (once you get into the habit of making it part of your workflow) and you can easily upgrade the discs over time.

I’ve recently bought a 1TB external drive from Easons for €99, they’re good value.

Off topic but I had similar trouble with a Lacie recently…but the problem wasn’t the HD, or the cable. I had linked my young lads Sony PSP up to put stuff on it and left the USB cable in. The connection on that cable also worked on my card reader so I used it rather than the original cable. This had a peculiar effect on the Lacie external HD for some reason. It couldn’t be seen by Lightroom, then it could be seen in Explore but wouldn’t expand. Then I had 4.9Gb listed on the properties of the HD where as I know I have over 400Gb. I tired a disc repair but that just wouldn’t do anything.
Then I replaced the original cable to the card reader and all was back to normal. I’ve never had a bit of trouble from it since I bought it from Sheldon and it saved my skin at least once. Odd!

Your problem could have been related to the current that the cable can take if the unit was powered by the cable.

In the old days a single USB socket could not supply enough power to drive many devices and some units came with 2 USB fittings on one end of the cable so the device could use two sockets on the computer or else use an external power supply.
