Fav lens Ive used so far is the 70-200 f2.8 L, followed very very closely by the 17-40 f4 L, in fact their both my favorites for different shots. Love the IS on the 70-20 out at 200, it does make a difference. and the 17-40 is just so sharp its gorgeous.
Shooting Nikon as of tomorrow so gonna have to try get some idead where is nice lenses are in the nikon lineup now tho, only nice one I know is the 17-50.MarkKeymasterNikon 70-200 VR if you can get it is meant to be superb. I had it on backorder for 6 weeks, decided to cancel
and get a D200 instead, couldnt wait any longer. Will get it later this year maybemasteroftherealmParticipantSHot on ali’s D200 the other day. Helluva sweet camera!!
Getting a D50 tomorrow with kit lens. Will do me for the moment I suppose :)
New glass will be high on my wishlist tho!MarkKeymasterFriend has the D50, great quality images from it, I think you’ll like it also to be honest.
masteroftherealmParticipantYeah? Never actually used one before! But getting this dirt cheap so not complaining, it gotten rave reviews online.
Hopefully itll live up to my 350d.LoGillParticipantHope you enjoy the D50 :) – a friend of mine has one and its a cracking camera … I fiddled around with it and the only gripe I had was that some of the functions are accessed through the digital menu – but i reckon you get used to that pretty fast… Good luck with it
Favourite lens – well its the only one i own :) so its the Kitlens for my D200 … 18-70.. But its pretty good… I’m planning a shopping trip soooooon.

UnalMember50mm 1.4 all the way. This lens lives on my camera, great lens for low light conditions.

Can’t really agree with that one I’m afraid :( I had the 1.8 before moving over to the 1.4 and there are definitely noticeable differences.
For one, 1.4 to 1.8 is almost a whole stop – which is almost twice the light! Leaving the additional light aside, the shallower DOF is also VERY noticeable
Then you have the build quality, where the 1.4 is metal in comparison to the plastic 1.8
Sharpness wise, both are pretty much equivalent. In fact a lot of tests have said the 1.8 is sharper, but I’ve not seen any discernible difference between them.
Don’t get me wrong, the 1.8 is an exceptional lens, but there are very real differences between them. What I would question, is are the differences worth almost doubling the price? Obviously I thought so at the time, but now I’m not so sure. The 50mm 1.8 is probably the best “bang for buck” lens around, without a shadow of doubt.

Im with ciaran on this one.
I shot a 50mm 1.4 and a 1.8 on my canon (RIP) and the difference was huge.
The 1.4 is a full stop better and the twice the light is a large difference. And also the bokeh on the 1.4 i found a lot more pleasing.
1.4 is twice the lens as the 1.8 which is a fine lens in its own regard.MarkKeymasterThat may be the case with the Canon 50mm. However I don’t think that there is a huge difference if any in quality ie sharpness/bokeh
between the Nikon 50mm 1.8 and 1.4.masteroftherealmParticipant
