hello everyone. i have just started a fetac level 6 digital photography course-home study course from the open college in dublin. i live in galway. i would like any advice or tips on photography. also i’m not sure how to start my first assignment and would like to know if anyone has done this course or something similar.here is the assignment.
the themes i am considering are architecture and music and the arts … as i’m looking to go into interior design full time and feel that this would help
MurchuParticipantHaven’t done anything similar, but if you’re having trouble starting, perhaps looking through your existing images for themes you would like to explore more, might be a good way to generate a little momentum. Many famous photographers work that way, shooting and then exploring what interesting themes or thoughts for projects emerge when they look through their work.
Of course you can always do it the other way around, set a brief, and shoot it, which would be more representative of the way certain professions like commercial photography and perhaps photojournalism work.
Common advice when choosing a theme or a project is not to be too broad when doing so, but instead narrow in on aspects of larger projects or themes.
Good luck with your assignment and course :)

lavaParticipantHi, tmcd,
I have just registered for this site, as I’m just about to start that course, I’ve applied for it, just waiting for confirmation. I’d be interested in knowing how you’re finding it so far. It’s good to know there’s somebody out there doing it at the same time. I hope you’re enjoying it! :)tmcdMemberlava wrote:

lavaParticipantThat sounds great, I’m really looking forward to getting started! That’s a definite yes on the brainstorming! Is there a lot of writing involved?

it doesn’t seem too bad but there are quite a bit of notes with the course i’m just trying to write up the brief for the first shoot. i emailed my tutor to ask him is there a certain amounts of words that are needed for the brief and how many pics should be included and what size.
i did my photoshoot last week got 86 pics but because of lighting issues and weather issues im down to 15 hq pics
lavaParticipantAh! I only just saw this! So I guess they are not very specific with their briefs! Hopefully your tutor will get back to you soon. What did you end up doing for your photoshoot? 15 pics sounds pretty good!

i ended up shooting the galway cathedral but it started pouring down so i moved to the inside only got 3 good pics cause the lighting wasn’t great and didn’t want to use the flash because its a church and there were people there praying and i didn’t want to seem disrespectful in any way so iv ended up with 12 exterior and 3 interior pics

i did a course with Griffith College and the lecturers would say put all of what happened in your ‘visual diary’ detailing your experiences of what happened when you went to do the shoot… rain, lighting etc.
Faye MorganParticipantYou might have finished your assignment by now, but a few suggestions below for your written brief:
Why did you choose the subject?
How did you investigate how it could be done?
Did you find any difficulties carrying out the assignment?
What went well?
What could you improve?
By answering these questions, and writing them down, you will document your learning experience.pollypocketMemberHi there, I have just started same course, I am a little confused re assignmnet, is there 3 plus the final project, could someone shed some light on this, I have done assessment 1, planning the shoot, I have done ass. 2 the camera, what is number 3 etc..its a lil vague in the notes..please..any light on this would be a great help..
