few of my pics

Mick-skylineParticipant
well heres a few of my pics what do you lot think, and be nice im only a novice :(
i didnt split them up just to make it easy for me and i dont wana go postin lots of new threads for a few pics..PeteTheBlokeMemberWelcome to the forum.
It’s a bit hard to give any detailed feedback on a batch. One or two photos
at a time tends to get a better response, but here goes:1. Looks too soft (out of focus) but the cloud colours are nice. Try to avoid shooting straight at the sun
when it’s this bright because you get weird effects (like the green flare spot in your pic).2. A promising shot. The sun was obviously bright because you have a very harsh shadow.
Butterflies look nicer on begonias than breeze blocks.3. Lovely colours and the shallow depth of field isolates the subject nicely. Try using a portrait
format for subjects that are vertically linear.4. It’s worth getting down to eye-level for children. You could have avoided the feet in the background.
Nice moment captured here though.5. This shot demonstrates nicely why very bright daytime sun is not the best light. You have
failed to capture the textures and the depth of colour in the flamingoes. Compositionally
you might have tried to show the reflections more.6. A good effort. The portrait photographers will give you lots of “rules” that you can go and
break immediately. The main issue I’d have with this shot is the hot spots around the cheek
and eye socket. Try using a lower ISO setting and finding a place where natural light comes in
at a window.7. and 8. I’ll let others comment.
I hope something I’ve said is useful :)

Mick-skylineParticipantthanks for the comments mate, as i said im starting out so need all the remarks available :D
im still in the process of figuring out the settings on the camera too and i have it about 7/8 months, its a canon 400D
MartinOCParticipantWelcome to the site Mick,
8 photos…you do have to think of the person giving the reply. They may not want to spend the time thinking about 8 photos and giving detailed feedback, as it does take time for many people to post even on one.
Often people comment only on certain types of shots, some on protraits, some on landscapes etc. so best to split for comments.
I also post pictures in bunches so I may be accused of “do as I say not as I do”, but usually in sets, I don’t tend to get detailed feedback on particular photos. But here’s a few comments…Pete basically covered it all though so I’m only adding a bit to his words
I like #1 and #6 best in both of them I like the mood and composition.
As Pete says the technical stuff in #1 could perhaps be better, but it depends on the what you were after in the shot. There are lots of little rules (mentioned by Pete): butterflys need flowers; children and animals are often best at their eye level (as we do with adults); avoid strong midday sun etc, that do make a big difference.
#3 is not focuced well and I think you may have blown the red channel. Your camera has a histogram display with separate in RGB, this is good to check. With my camera (the same as yours) strong reds are hard to capture because if the exposure is too strong they get blown out and lose texture (and colour).
#7, the colours are nice, but in this type of shot it is good to get something strong/interesting on the horizon, a silhouette of a house or tree etc. The bush here is distracting and the photo has no point of interest.
Overall I think you take a decent photo, where the shots fall short is in the technical/rule stuff, which is stuff that is easy to learn about here on the forum, with practice too of course. Good luck, keep posting.

Mick-skylineParticipantill try post them seperatly ffrom now on so :D, thanks martin,
#3 is actually of a very pale pink flower in the garden, so in that case the colour is very strong, but i suppose could be better, and #7 well that was spur of the moment shooting, i was a passo in a car going up the motorway and seen the colours of the sunset and really wanted the pic of it there were a few nice silhouettes on the horizon just as i shot but because we were moving pretty quick the bush got in the way, although i still think it turned out pretty well.
i need plenty of practice and ill be out alot now trying to perfect my pics.
