Few of my portraits

Just thought I’d share a few of my portraits. C&C appreciated as I love portrait photography but don’t know a lot about it.

I hope that isn’t too many pics, those are just some of my portraits that I like :) Any tips/suggestions for better shots please fire away!

5 photos, 46 views and not one comment!!! I’m not sure I’m going to be a huge help though, as portraits are not really my forte but I’ll give my 2 cents worth anyway.
#1 The green colour cast on her face is a bit offputting but that could be rectified with some PS work. Also, I’d crop off the ledge at the bottom and straighten up the image to make the frame a bit more vertical. Can’t quite decide if that bottle is adding anyting either. Maybe- maybe not?
#2 Don’t like the harsh lighting on the left side of her face and the expression is a bit empty.
#3 Nice shot but I’d crop some sky off the top – almost to her head.
#4 Lovely capture! I think your decision to make this b&w works well although I’d be tempted to up the contrast a little using Levels. Pity the background is so busy.
#5 Again, beautiful capture and expression. I’d either clone out the window in the top left or else crop down to the top of her fringe.
Like I said, I’m no expert in this genre but hopefully I’ve been some help. Maybe someone a bit more knowledgeable can add to this.

Thanks Mark, definitely some things there I can use! I’ll do a little touching up on these soon I think.

The first shot is tricky. The window frame itself was set into the wall crooked so when I straightened it the body looked off balance. I ended up straightening it horizontally instead using the bottom of the ledge as a ruler. I can probably desaturate the greens in the area around her face easily enough.

The second shot was tough as well, using skylight window on overcast day from above right side and she was sitting low on the floor. I also don’t have a flash yet so couldn’t even the shadows out. I brightened it up quite a bit to give a softer feel.

I”ll try a tighter crop on the third one, think you might be right on this one, I tend to crop so that the eyes are on the top Third line intersection. I’m still learning photography so I probably stick to the Rule of Thirds a little more than I should which comes from my preference of shooting landscapes (and sometimes rules are best broken). I’m not entirely sure on good frame position when it comes to portraits so just go with what I’m used to.

The fourth shot wasn’t planned and taken out my back garden. Used my 550D and 50mm 1.8 to blur out the background as best I could without losing too much detail in the face. I agree the contrast can probably be bumped up a bit on this.

I’ll definitely remove that picture frame in the 5th picture, my eyes are always drawn to the childs eyes in this one so never really noticed it, but it’ll bug me now that its pointed out haha. Not sure I’d like to crop off any more of her head unless it was a much tighter face shot.

Love the first portrait – quite atmospheric! And the last one is good too (maybe just boost the contrast a bit).
    Keep up the good work!

I know next to nothing about portraiture, but these look good to me. I really like how you used the frame from the location in #1, but maybe you should have removed the bottle. Avoiding stray hairs crossing the eyes as in #2 would help. Well done

Thanks miki, all of my shots are taken in the moment and none were really planned as such so I tend to miss small details like those when I see a nice shot. I can remove the hair easily enough in photoshop :) I dont think my skills in PS quite extend to removing the bottle though :P

Kenny, lovely set of images. #5 is clear favourite I think if you could crop most of the window frame out you wouldnt lose anything on the overall infact should result in even stronger composition. #4 i might suggest same. #1 great potential with a little tidy around and if the girl leaned forward so no green cast easy said now after the fact i know.#2 and #3 i wouldnt change though not as strong images as the others.

I took this one over the weekend, this one was kinda planned, I had wanted a shot of the kids sitting in the grass in the park on a sunny day, it was a nice Saturday so went for a walk in the park with my girlfriend and we happened to bump into some of my family randomly, I also just happened to have my camera on me as there was an Indian Mela festival on that day in the park which I went to have a look at. Right time, right place, love it when shots like this come together:

5 is probably the best, I really like number 1. It was a good spot to use the window as a frame. 5 however is probably the way to go

Thanks folks, I’ve increased the exposure a little on the last pic to brighten their faces. Feel its a little dark in the middle when it should be the highlight of the photo :)
