Hi
I thinking about getting myself some graduated ND filters and was wondering if anyone could tell me whats the best brand to buy.
Basically, i’m thinking, Lee v Cokin, I know that the main difference is the price and one is glass while the other is plastic.
But what is the difference in the photo captured? Thanks,
PaulLWheelerParticipantHi,
In my opinion there is a big difference in quality. I used Cokin ND filters (both the ND grads and the NDs) and they always gave a red colour cast which had to be removed in post production. I now use Lee filters and they are definitely worth the price. I just wish that I hadn’t wasted the money on the Cokin filters and bought the Lee filters in the first place.
By the way the Lee ND grad filters are not glass. There is a glass ND filter (not a grad) which you might be thinking of….

brendancullenParticipantHi Paul.
I have the Cokin P wide angle holer and a 77mm ring adapter. They have a better quality Z system also.
available at http://www.Jessops.co.uk in belfast.
I have two filters – a Cokin P 2 stop ND grad and the HiTech 3 Stop ND grad.

HiTech filters are better than Cokin P – but still ‘plastic’
I haven’t held or used a LEE.
I use RAW – so any color cast is a minor issue when evident with Cokin.

PeteBedellMemberCokin filters are not true ND. They are more correctly called grey and grey grads. This may be causing the above mentioned colour cast. The Lee filters are true neutral density probably why they cost so much.
if you do buy the Cokin system go for the Z pro series which are 100mm wide so the holder will also take the Lee filters.
The must have filter these days is the 10 stop ND for long exposure. Cokin don’t make one at the moment. However the Lee ‘Big Stop’ will run you around €100.
It’s all a matter of money and quality. Like me you will probably end up replacing the Cokins with the Lee system eventually.rocket manMemberCheers for the advice guys. I think maybe I might hold out a little longer and save a little more because I think the Lee system is the star player in the filter league. I’m really like the work with the 10 stop filter, might also go on the shopping list.
MartinParticipantAnother brand to look at is Singray. Regarded as on par with the Lee filters…They provided hard and soft graduation like the Lees.
Worth checking if there is a price difference…

On a slightly different type of filter they sell a Vari ND filter… very expensive but very handy… http://www.singh-ray.com/varind.html” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
aoluainParticipantlight is analogueParticipantI use Tiffen 4×4″ glass filters and a Lee holder. No cast, no scratches (yet), but may be difficult to get outside US.
