It seems men standing outside pubs seem to hold some attraction for me lately?

(see previous image “The life of Reilly” http://www.thewonderoflight.com/misc/smoking.jpg)

This one is a little bit more up close and personal. Comments and critique welcome as usual. And don’t worry… it’s all valid :D

I’m beginning to dislike you intensely ;)

Its a cracking shot…. loads of personality and character in there. I love the close crop and his eyes.. They are so intense in that shaggy frame of a face.

    Love it :)

Excellant shot, great character in it, the hand tells as much a story in this pic as the shaggy eyebrows and beard and the eyes bring out the person beneth, like it!! Technically fine too. Candid shot?

Can’t find a single fault with it Ciaran!
Very nice portrait – do you approach people and ask to take their picture or take them without people knowing? I like the one on your website as it shows the context (ie pub doorway), but this one is a real character! :)

lol….look at those eyebrows never mind the rest of his hair! Good character image Ciaran and this is the sort of image that would do well in camera club competitions (in my area anyway!)

    Spank you very much :)

I guess that depends on your definition of candid. It wasn’t posed as I didn’t direct the person on how to look/stand, but he was completely aware of me photographing him. It would be hard not to I guess, since I was 3~4 foot from him pointing a camera straight in his face :)

It very much depends on the shot. In the majority of cases I go over and talk to the people and ask can I shoot them, as was the case for this shot. But in the case of the “life of Reilly” the subject was unaware he was being photographed. Some shots demand that the photographer stay hidden or else we’ll intrude on the moment.

Way ahead of you Ross. This is shot as part of a series of images for a panel competition for my camera club :)

Well if you enter it in competition I would like to hear how it does – Gerald from BPIC got a starred black and white print last year with a similar print of a ‘vintage bearded character’ – if that is a reasonable way to describe him….

Another gem here Ciaran, its the intensity in the eyes that drag me right in everytime, look at the chaps nails he must being mining in Arigna! His beard actually frames it very well keeping the interest on his face and hand, although would a very very subtle vingette help?

Yup.. quite possibly. There already is a very slight vignette but I would be and am tempted to go a touch stronger. I only took this shot today and in my enthusiasm I probably posted this a little early. Normally, I find it’s best to wait a few days before you process your shots, so you can see them with a less sentimental eye. Already today I’ve gone through about 100 different crops, edits, combinations of this shot.

    Here’s my latest

So… colour or B&W. Choices, choices

He looks alot more melancholy in colour .. I have to say the composition works even better too.. Its not fair to have to pick ….. :(

    Colour .. definately colour.

hmmmmm….when I see the second version (colour) I can’t help thinking that the black and white conversion could be improved upon, probably in terms of darkening it and adding contrast. At the moment the colour version is streets ahead in my book. And a good example of how you dont have to stick by the rules to make an image like this succeed – although the subject is centre of the frame, it works.

Jaysus the Color is magic! The composition also works here, although the first post is superb this wins hands down for me Ciaran.

The eye on the right of the photo (his left) falls right on the diagonal which probably helps explain why attention is drawn to the eyes. It has great impact and it brings me back for another look.
